I've decided on a retractable Tonneau cover for 24 Lariat, but an having trouble figuring out a few critical to me measurements and would appreciate help from those who have installed any of the retractable covers:
1)canister size and how much room is left between the bottom of the canister and the bed of the truck.
2) Tonneau opening width. When open how much space does the open cover take up, this would be the canister width+ any part of the cover that is left outside the canister on the rails.
3) and finally when in the open position is the canister likely to collect leaves, dirt and rain becuse the top does not seal against the canister?

My intrest is primarily the Rool-n-Lock brand and Retrax/Gator models. But would consider others.

Thanks all.

I talked to Retrax yesterday inquired about the same topic. On the unit I have on order through the local dealer/installer, the cannister dimensions go like this. Front to back is 12 inches, and top to bottom is 10 inches.

This is the powered unit.

Thanks for the info. I had not considered the electric models. Any idea on weight?

Also when you get yours please put up some pics!

I have to ask the installer on the weight. Maybe the Retrax online might have some info.

On pictures, yes I plan on posting a few. I was told the release date from the factory on the powered unit may be early next month.

The only reason I didn’t buy another retractable tonneau cover was because of the loss of space in the bed. You lose almost a foot in space, and you can’t really place much under the box since it’s oddly shaped.

Looking at the pros, I love that I can open it up without having to unlock my truck. Additionally, the ability to lock it into position virtually in any place was helpful when hauling awkward items. Lastly, I felt like the seal was best when compared to the hard rolling cover and tri fold hard cover.

I'll be using the truck a lot for towing a small travel trailer under 5800 pounds and want to be able to open and close the cover easily and open and use in any position. That make the retractable covers a good choice for me. And i have some plastic totes a smidgen under 10 inches tall that should fit under the roll-n-lock cover, but i think a retrax canister is to deep, requiring smaller totes.

My other concern is weight, don't want to subtract to much from the payload for a cover.

Yeah, you get a little more free space with the roll-n-lock (think 2 inches?). For your situation, retractable seems like the ideal fit. As for weight, it’ll be right under 90 pounds if I’m not mistaken.

I have had a Leer HF650 fold for a few years which has been great. Just ordered a Bakflip MX4 for my RR (Build date for RR is Tues?). I did research on roll-out because I really liked the idea of automatic roll-back. I researched: Roll-N-Lock eSeries; GatorTrax; Retrax PowerTraxProMX. I ended up back with fold-up for 3 reasons 1) The seal when closed is better on flips vs. roll (none are perfectly water proof, but fold seems better), 2) No loss of bed length (BTW Roll-N-Lock seemed to have the smallest dimensions @ 7.25in depth while still supporting 500lb), 3) Protection of Cab Glass (with the folds all the way up against the cab, the rear glass window is protected/covered - so no worries about refrigerators, four-wheelers, etc.damaging glass.). Just something to think about. Good luck with your decision either way.

A friend of mine has the Roll n Lock on his Colorado and I am leaning towards that one as it doesn't take up much bed space. The only disadvantage I can tell is that the top is a softer vinyl so it is not as secure for theft. He also got hail damage on it and the vinyl tore up a bit. But overall, it still seems like a viable option. Curious if any others have experience with this type.

I can take measurements when I get some time. I got the Retrax Pro XR. I like it but if something similar that fits/works better comes out, I'll likely switch.

My gripes are the fitment in length, seems about 1/4 to 1/2 short as the seal for the tailgate just barely rests against the tailgate when fully closed. The Ranger bed has plenty of holes to keep it from being waterproof but the tailgate is the biggest leak. You do lose some space with the canister both in height and depth. I'll get some measurements.

Love the looks and utility otherwise.

I have the RetraxONE XR. the cover extends 13" in the fully open and locked position and there is approximately 11.5" of clearance underneath the cannister. it weighs 89 lbs.

Thanks, can confirm!

Also, for open area dimensions, I measured about 45" in length from top of the cover edge to tailgate and 51.5" in width from drivers side to passenger side cover rail edges.

How are you still liking it? I"m considering this one as well, but just worried about losing 1ft in a already small bed.

Not going to lie, I hate losing a foot of the bed. I get a lot of comments on that when I haul stuff - it's no F-150. But for my use case, I appreciate the security more and the ease of use. I just couldn't do a soft top and I don't think I would like the tri-fold. If EGR would have had theirs out when I got this one I would have tried it as it seems to take up just slightly less space for the roll. That's probably the only thing different I would have done.

Thanks for the follow up. Curious, is the canister removable? If i wanted to extra space temporarily to move something, can you just remove canister and then put back in.
