The Annoying "Hands on Wheel" Alert

I've had it give me the hands on the wheel warning I ignored it and then it brake checked me .

if you keep ignoring the brake checks, it will steer the car to the shoulder and park it with the hazards on. the brake checks are basically a way to get you to wake up if you doze off.

I decided to turn off Lane Centering but left Lane Keeping on. The Ford system is pretty aggressive compared to the Japanese systems. I think I've reenabled Lane Centering twice on long highway trips.

it isn't detecting your hands, it detects the torque being applied to the wheel.

in other words, you need to jiggle the wheel a bit and provide steering input when you get that warning.

Yes, that is my current fix but I still find the alert frequency annoying.

i have been looking for forscan setting to, at least, extend the time before the notification, havent found it yet

The best method I've found is to rest my hand on the steering wheel such that it's weight is constantly applying a little torque to the steering wheel and you can feel the system tugging the wheel back to stay in the lane.

Indeed, the system is sensing steering input, and i would say requires too much. I get alot of rental cars and usually just a lil wiggle will satisfy the system, but on fords you have to damn near start a lane change to satisfy it sometimes.

That is what I find annoying.

The water bottle trick will work if it's only half full and mounted from left to right. The sloshing of the water will satisfy the computer but won't overpower the auto steer. Otherwise the computer will think you are dead or fell asleep and it will slam on the brakes for you.

And this is all good until you get to a spot on the road where there are no painted lane lines. Then the truck drives straight off into the wall or guard rail.

I bought a faux leather and rubber steering wheel cover that fits tightly. It seems to prevent 90% of the annoying warning signals. You still have to keep your hands on the wheel but not a death grip like before and works at any hand position.

You've tried this, I'm guessing? I tried a few different configurations with no success.

theres so many potholes in my area, theres no way to hold the steering wheel steady enough to get the warning

A friend of mine with 2 Teslas (Yeah, that's another discussion...) successfully outsmarted the "hands on" alert by using two ankle weights attached to the steering wheel (insert face palm).
*Possibly* less annoying than the warning we receive?
