Think the 10 speeds are fixed yet?

So I know the 2.3 has been around for years, seems to overall be well dialed in.

How about the 10 speeds? Have they figured these out yet? Currently getting hosed by gm with my canyon and the trans issues they have.

I’m cautiously skeptical about the ranger, mostly following this fourm to see initial quality and roll out.

Thoughts?

Pretty sure Ford and GM co-developed the 10 speed transmission but both use different software tunes for them. I read about the issues on the colorado/canyon and also their 2024 models issue -whew a stop sale! - but I was thinking they were all 8 speeds. Any ways, pretty sure both manufacturers have used the 10 speed in numerous vehicles over the years. My wife drives a 2018 expedition with the 10 speed, think around 50k, rolls down the road well. I plan on ordering a ranger once the 2.7L is available to order. I have no reservation/concern with it based on my experience with it so far. Maybe others that have one can give their opinions.

Ford has now dropped the 10R80 Tranny that was in the 5G Rangers, and is putting the 10R60 Tranny in the new 6G Rangers. Hopefully the 'issues' go away with the 10R80 being gone.

Both Trannys are 10 speeds - the difference between the two is that the 10R80 was designed to handle more torque than the 10R60. But they are putting the same 10R60 in the Raptors with 400+ lbs of torque, so they must be confident in its ability to handle the Ranger's torque.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge regarding the technical aspects of these Trannys will come along and enlighten us further :)

My theory is Ford's issue with the 10spd has something to do with its adaptive learning strategy and multiple drivers sharing the vehicle. I'm not saying that's the cause, but it's a compelling coincidence, especially since GM chose to go with a fixed shift programming from the factory and seemed to avoid the issues Ford had with it.

But that's just some workbench quarterbacking. If anyone knows the truth, it'd be the techs working on them.

The 10R80 main issue was the CDF drum. The CDF drum was updated in 08/22. The 10R60 also had the same issue but now also has the updated drum. There still may be some issues with valve body’s sticking on both. There is a TSB that addresses both the CDF drum and valve body issues for both transmissions

I hate the transmission in my wife’s 2020 Explorer ST so bad that if it’s not improved in my new truck, there will be an extra Raptor for sale in Arkansas.

It’s. That. Bad.

I know the max torq for the 10R60 is almost reached with the raptor.

I’d be very curious to see what happens when people tune the raptor, beyond its stated limit it can handle.

Def will void the warranty

It’s the same transmission isn’t it?

Now that’s some good info. Never heard anyone give me a specific mechanical reason for the issues. Any idea on where I can read up on it? Mostly for some free time bored reading

Do I look like a fool
Im pretty confident if they went to the trouble of future proofing the engines in Raptors with forged rods and cranks they would be happy the box can take it.
There is approved tuners in Aus that will ramp up to 500bhp without it affecting your warranty . they generally dont do that if there nervous the box will Sh1t itself once over 400bhp.
I like the box in the raptor , responds well to all different modes and doesn't over heat when hammered so its so far so good from me with nearly 20k on the clock.

Same engine and transmission. There are tons of TSBs on the Explorer, mainly about the valve body, but I also think it’s a tuning issue. Ford could/should have resolved all of that with the Raptor. We’ll see…

Had the 10 speed in both my 2015 and 2019 F150 and never had an issue.
My understanding is that it is the same transmission

Unless Ford changed things, the 60 stands for 600lbft of torque. It's got plenty of strength to handle the Raptor.
