Never bought or needed chains before, but since I've gotten the raptor I have a feeling it'll be a needed piece of kit for winter and shoulder season travels. Thought I'd ask for some suggestions here on what to look (out) for or any brands you recommend. Thanks.

Hey mods, tire chains aren't raptor specific.

Hi,

I assume that 4WD and diff locks should typically be sufficient for the climbs, but on the descends chains might be clever.

Thus, I got myself a set of König K-Summit XXL (for 285/17-17), even though the price is high. According to the videos I saw online, installation seems pretty easy and they shouldn´t scratch the rims. As I never used them yet, this is still to be proven!

Remark: I carried chains in my previous 4 WD truck/cars during winter trips in the mountains all the time and never needed them, even in heavy snow.
As usual, it is better to have it than to need it... 😉

Cheers

Yup. I'd rather have them and never use them, then need them and be up a creek.

Chains are a total PITA, and if you don't use them semi-regularly, you'll struggle putting them on. 3PMSF rated tires are so good these days that chains are only needed in the most severe of situations.

Ford’s official guidance says rear wheels only, even on the Raptor. Not saying they are right or wrong, just wanted to point out what the manual actually says. I live in an area where chains are commonly used and sometimes required by DOT to keep going or you get turned around, so it was pretty surprising when I was researching chains myself.

The RR wheels (both styles) are 8.5” wide and you will definitely wreck them if you run real chains. My winter wheels are 17x7.5” Bronco takeoffs, and there is LOTS of clearance. Plus they are way WAY easier to keep clean. I always carry heavy truck chains in winter (they must be in the vehicle and are required by law in WA when traveling the passes) but have never actually needed them when using good winter tires.

Interesting. They install on the outer face only? I need to find that video you mentioned. Edit: looks easy enough to install. Why did you go external only versus a wrap style?

I bought the Konig XD-16 for my winter trips in the RR. I was never directed to put them on (they glance at the tires, 3 peak rated, and wave me through), but I also never drove up during or directly after a storm.

Note, the RR manual says 12mm chain size limit due to inner tire and wheel well clearance. My wheels are offset and it's lifted so 16mm clears with plenty of room. I've only played with them a couple times in the snow/mud to test them out, and they worked great but are definitely more aggressive than you probably want if you know you'll be on-road.

I'm not sure why, but the manual also says not to use automatic tensioning chains.
