Transmission Rebuild? 7k miles - ADVICE

Hey everyone,

I wanted to post here to gather opinions of others. My truck is at 7k miles and at around 5k miles I started getting audible clunking and thumping on a cold start on the first few gears both in accelerating and decelerating at low speeds. The sound was obviously the transmission shifting and it was getting worse.

I took it into the dealership yesterday for the recall along with letting them know of my issue and they reached out today they needed to “perform an overhaul of the main control in the transmission”. Turns out they replaced the main control- whatever this means

I’m 28 and not a super huge car guy and this is my first NEW vehicle.

I understand this is a “rebuild” of the transmission, is that acceptable or should I be pushing for a new transmission based on the mileage?

should I ask for anything else? Any advice?

Most likely the valve body was replaced and the electronics that control it. It's not a rebuilt transmission. Dealers would not do that. They just replace parts.

Youre telling me, I brought it in on a 1/4 tank. They're saying they need 5 gallons worth of fuel to test? At 7/gal?? The avg price in my city is 4.93 today... I was definitely not happy.

If it was internal to the transmission it's likely the valve body or the solenoid pack, if external likely the transmission control module (TCM). I'd be asking them which one they "overhauled".

Appreciate it, calling tomorrow morning to clarify as this was very vague for them to text over.

My guess is a rebuild or overhaul would be disassembling the transmission and replacing all the clutches and stuff. The valve body is bolted inside the trans and controls the shifting. I guess it's considered a "part" so replacing it isn't a rebuild.

I hope this doesn’t happen to anyone, my late 25 Ranger barely has 1k miles on it and it’s suppose to be the new 10R60. There are no more reliable truck these days..

Update for those following:

TCM is the part that was replaced, should know more later today after its test driven.

if anyone is experiencing the same shifting issues at low speeds as me, definitely take it in to the dealership

I have a buddy who is a Chevy Trany Tech for 30 years
If it is low mileage He will just replace the bad part . Some stealerships will replace the part and charge you or the insurance for a rebuilt . 7k I doubt there is anything worn out . Clunking to me sounds like a transfer case issue .

I have had similar issues since new and have had it in to 3 different dealers who all simply reset the learning pattern and said they didn't notice anything while driving. It is jarring and completely detracts from the driving experience. About to speak to corporate again directly and take it into another different dealer. This info helps, thanks.

How do you prove they’re resetting the learning? Just curious what I need to screenshot if this happens to me.

I’ve killed several Ford transmissions - the dealers around me would definitely pull something like this until it’s out of warranty.

It's not hard to reset the TCM on most vehicles, the Ranger included. It erases the "learned" adaptation and forces it to start fresh. There is no reason a dealership would not do this, it's too easy and costs them practically nothing.

Sometimes you can train it to adapt differently by changing your driving style after a reset. It's never really "finished" adapting though, and will continue to adapt to driving styles and conditions for the life of the vehicle, although initial adaptation will be more noticeable in the first drive cycles after a reset.
