"The contract bargaining team at General Motors early this week kept a close eye on an economic counteroffer that its crosstown rival, Stellantis, had just presented to the UAW.

Hours earlier, GM had handed its own latest offer to the union.

At that moment, neither of those two proposals apparently matched the one from Ford Motor Co. "Ford has moved much further in our direction than the other two have," a UAW leader familiar with the negotiations but not authorized to talk told the Detroit Free Press on Monday."

This link gives a few more details. They say they're closer but there is still oceans between. I am honestly not holding my breath sadly.

"Ford CEO Jim Farley said late Tuesday night the company remains “optimistic that we can reach an agreement with the UAW in the next two days.”

However, he said there are limits to what Ford is willing to offer.

Farley said the company’s latest offer includes “pay increases, elimination of tiers, inflation protection, five weeks of vacation, 17 paid holidays [and] bigger contributions for retirement.”

“We put an offer in today that’s our most generous offer in 80 years of the UAW and Ford,” Farley said during the reveal of the 2024 Ford F-150 in Detroit. “It’s a significant enhancement, still optimistic that we’ll get a deal. But there is a limit because we have to protect for the future, future investments and the profitability of the company funds those.”

Farley said Ford is “not going to support” a four-day workweek."

With less than 12 hours before the deadline here is the latest

I feel like Ford is certainly trying hard to avoid this. It is disconcerting that there does seem more emphasis on planning a strike than reaching an agreement.

I don't have any experience with Unions, but to me, it seems like the biggest needle mover is wages and retirement. It is what people care about the most. The 4 day work week is a non-starter. That's just not how America operates (albeit there are examples where it works).

In my job I don't work directly with unions but I see results of their bargaining and you would be surprised at how many value more time off than higher wages.

Yeah, I agree that all the topics being negotiated on are certainly important to people, I just don't think those are the areas that will end up being agreed to by the automakers. It is just easier and probably cheaper to just increase wages and retirement benefits more. I think right now UAW is at 36% and Ford is at 20%. I bet their next offer is in the middle of that at like 28-30%, and minimal increases on the other stuff. But who knows.

I am not sure Ford will offer up anything more at this point and probably won't until after strikes. I fully support the 4 day work week and am on the side of the workers here, but I understand Ford realistically can't afford that with how it's structured right now.

In the end the real losers are probably going to be the consumers once again. If there's an agreement, the increase in costs will get passed down to consumers. If there is a strike, it will increase prices of vehicles on the lot. If consumers want to avoid that and go to the foreign competition, well Toyota and and Honda have no inventory. It's just a perfect shit storm once again.

You're right. It is partly why the UAW is in a strong bargaining position right now and probably why they are trying to better their position given the market right now.
