Water damage to headliner after side curtain recall

Hi all,
I recently got the side curtain airbag recall done. I was going to skip it due to reading stories on here about issues with the quality of work, but that slipped my mind when scheduling the most recent service where they asked if I wanted to get it done. I experienced similar things to other forum members after getting my truck back (dirt/stains left on headliner, portions of the headliner not tucked back under trim near the front dome lights, etc.), but I was able to rectify these myself and did not want to deal with the hassle of bringing it back to the dealership.

Today, after a couple days of heavy rain and having taken it through the car wash recently, I noticed what looked like water damage to the headliner in the rear driver's side corner of my truck. It was dry so I'm not sure when it happened, and I later tried spraying that area at the car wash and it did not seem to get damp, but I've had the truck for two years and it seems it would be too much of a coincidence that water began intruding into my headliner after an already shoddy service involving taking the headliner down. I did schedule an appointment with the dealership, but the service advisor made it clear it will be an uphill battle to get them to admit fault if it was indeed caused by the recall work. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar damage with water intrusion after getting the recall done, or if it possibly is unrelated.

There should be a bolt near that area (secures the roof rail)

Wonder if they knocked it dropping the liner

Attaching the pic to this reply. Hopefully it's clear enough where in the cab it is, sort of an awkward angle to get to.

If it is coming from the roof rail then that might make sense. I tried spraying the corner of the glass and it didn't seem to let any water in. I did not spray it from the top of the roof.

Strange, maybe the roof trim was removed.

I put a Slim Line 2 roof rack on. That location is where there is a hole in roof for black trim.

This picture is at the front. There are 4 holes in roof for Ditch trim. Two holes on each side.

so you had. to drop the liner to remove the black trim?’

I guess the other spot where there might be a leak would be the antenna.

thst seems like an odd pattern for a leak, maybe something was sprayed on like a cleaner?

I would guess a leak from the roof channel trim. I put the roof rails on mine and no leaks but I sealed it from both sides when I installed them. My dealership said that they don't take the headliner down completely when they did this recall. Plus that looks like the drivers side and my understanding is it was only a passengers side recall but.i could be wrong.

I added a trailrax roof rack, and the rear bolt holes are about right there the yellow dot. but they are recessed a bit, I cant see them being knocked that easily. but it is a possibility. also the foam gasket around the hole could be gone or something. but that is the area of the bolt that holds the gutter trim down. 2 bolts and 3m foam tape along the length and around the bolts.

You dont have too. remove the A,B,C Pillars, and a long extension, and a medium/deep socket, and you bend the liner slightly and gets you at the nuts. the bolts are attached the gutter trim.

Thank you all for your insight. I'll wait and see what the dealership says I guess, but the fact the leak appeared after they did the recall makes me a little suspicious. I'm not sure what all exactly is done when they do the recall, but I was under the impression that it was both passenger and driver side airbags but I obviously don't know what all is required to take apart to get to those components.

I also thought it was possible it wasn't a leak, but we had another good rain this morning and I just confirmed that area is damp, so there must be water getting in from somewhere. I haven't touched the headliner or roof rails myself so if it wasn't anything the dealer did then something must have failed or degraded for some other reason. I did try lifting the plastic trim on the roof to see if it was maybe loose, but it seems like it's still attached correctly.

I am fairly sure it is both sides.

I had two RRs done for the airbag recall with no leaks. I agree with the others, not really related to the airbag recall. I watched them take care of mine and couldn’t see the wife’s when it was done. The tech that did ours had done a bunch and really didn’t have to drop the headliner. Seems like a channel leak to me. Hope this helps.
