Below you can see the MPG numbers for a cross country trip. I drove our 2024 Ranger Lariat 2.3L a total of 6400 miles over 13 days touching 19 states. We started the trip in NW Montana on state highways for the first couple hundred miles before hitting I-90 heading east. Most of MT and SD have an 80MPH speed limit which cost a 2-3 MPG, even more in WY because of up/down the long hills. We traveled between 500/600 miles each day because we’re getting older. We spent a few days in Jacksonville NC before heading SW towards central TX then north back to MT. I kept track of the all the gas receipts with the data recorded for each tank. I have a couple pictures of the dash for you to analyze because I know some of you might want to see the data. Truck has 9600 miles on it since April 2nd delivery.

Total Trip Miles 6402 miles
Display Avg. MPG 24.8 MPG
Avg. MPG Calculated 23.6 MPG
Avg. MPG Difference 1.1 MPG
Best MPG Tank 27.48 Calculated MPG
Worst MPG Tank 19.44 Calculated MPG
Gas Cost $ 867.84
Gallons Used 271.57 Gallons
Avg $$ Per Gallon $3.13

I’m starting planning a trip up the Alaskan Highway for next summer, maybe 2025.

Ya know, compared to the release of the 3rd gen canyon and Colorado, ranger seems pretty smooth.

every day tons of ppl would post all of its problems. Ranger appears to have a lot fewer.
Granted lesss have been made and this fourm is a bit of a ghost town

I purchased a 2024 Colorado ZR2 and promptly had a buy back due to issues.
Ended up purchasing a 24 XLT and have been problem free thus far. Would have gotten a Raptor had I found one in my spec at that time.
The Ranger has been great

i noticed this too. before i bought my ranger i was watching both forums pretty obsessively because i was considering all my options.

the problems people had with the GM trucks were very serious issues - completely dead trucks that were instantly draining batteries and dying, headlights you couldn't toggle, roofs denting etc. lots of guys were doing buybacks/lemon laws very quickly. stuff so bad that GM had to issue a stop sale earlier this year and address things.

while the ranger has had its 1st year issues, the vast majority are small QC gripes that are nothing compared to what i saw with the colorados/canyons.

Thanks for sharing. I've noticed a similar ~1 mpg discrepancy between the truck display and actual hand calculation.

Probably the main thing I will second think is not going with the 2.3L for that extra 5mpg potential. Were you carrying any considerable payload for the trip?

Also, the fact that this or other 6g Ranger forums is a bit of a ghost town is probably a good thing. People tend to find places to complain on the internet when there are problems rather than sing praises after all.

The 2.3 has been out for many years, in the previous gen '19 Ranger and in the mustang befor that. Ford has had the time to work the bugs out. It's basically bullet proof at this point. Has a hefty chain driven oil pump. 2.7 seems schetchy to me. Plus they say you can tune the 2.3 for 400ft/lbs torque and 350 hp, w/o issues. Replacement low milage motors are plentiful and cheap. way i went.

I have been considering the 6G with a 2.7, because 2.7 > 2.3. But I am very satisfied with the performance of my 5G 2.3 and wouldn't break a deal if I couldn't get the 2.7L. BTW, 2.7 has been out a while, available in Broncos and F150s.
As for 6G availability, I have yet to see one on the road her in south Louisiana. A couple of dealers in a 50-mile radius have 1 for sale on the lot, with others 'in transit'.

During the trip I had a payload of about 300lbs and two adults. I have towed a trailer totalling about 4k. That trip was only about 75 miles. Even small hills I'd see 8-12 mpg on the display, 20 mpg on the flat areas. I have no issues with the power of the 2.3L. The transmission sometimes has trouble under heavy acceleration trying to shift to soon. I would guess sport mode would hold the gears a little longer which would help. Love the Ranger, and the ride sometime make you forget you're driving a truck.

Thanks for sharing - always good to know what "real" MPG numbers look like.

Your mileage average is pretty close to what I got on a 1500 mile to West Texas. I was also travelling at 80 mph on I-10 west of San Antonio. Great little truck to travel in.

The differential between displayed MOG and actual MPG of -1.1 Mpg is exactly what I’m seeing as well.

Looking at your display setup and like it. I have the XLT with the Tech packages and cannot for the life of me configure mine like this. Is there that much difference between the Lariat and the XLT?
