What is the maximum trailer/cargo weight (GVWR) of a 2.3 Ranger without tow package (and aftermarket Class 3 hitch installed)?

The towing guide says that the tow package is required for trailers over 3,500 pounds or a tongue weight over 350 pounds and is based on a bumper pull configuration. No indication of a GVWR or GCWR in that case.

FYI, You must deduct the weight of the receiver, ball and mount, something like 40 pounds, from the max allowed hitch weight and also from the truck payload number on your door jamb sticker…..

It is clearly stated there that 3500lbs is the most you can tow without having at least the base tow package. .

The standard tow package just adds a Class 3 hitch and 7 pin wiring. Adding the hitch yourself will get you to 7,500 lbs., but unless you add it yourself, you won't have the 7pin harness and potential TBC.

Thanks John and Jason - I had seen that and studied it. What I saw was that the bumper can tow 3500 lbs. According to Jason above, I can add a Class 3 hitch and a trailer brake get to 7500 lbs, so I’m hoping that’s the case.

I suggest caution about towing up to 3,500 lbs with bumper only & no trailer brake controller (TBC). US DoT & many states have regulations. For example, MT says towing anything > 3,000 needs a TBC, & if trailer weighs less than 3,000, towing a trailer weighing more than 40% of the towing vehicle needs a . So, if you're towing a 2,100 lb trailer with a 5,000 lb Ranger, you need a TBC.

You'll need the hitch that comes in the Tow Package along with all of the extras like the trailer brake controller and the TBC Control module along with the cooling upgrades to achieve the 7500LBS.

I'm not sure where you got that info, but this Draw Tite receiver I put on takes you to 7,500 lbs towing. It bolts on the same way as the OEM hitch.
You'll still need a TBC for that much towing.
