MPG for Raptors is wild

Speed up and slow down like you want good mpg.

You’re right. 10lbs per wheel does it. 10lbs per wheel rotating is 40lbs. You’ll be savings 160lbs of rotating mass. Physics.

How do I know? I dropped 10lbs a wheel and my MPG shot up 1 on average.

I get 18-19mpg highway with 35's not sure how accurate this is. I did adjust the tire circumference in FORSCAN, but mainly to recalibrate the speedometer . Wheel and tire set up is somewhat on the lighter side.

Different ambient temperature, different traffic, different road, are all going to change your average MPG. 160 lbs isn't going to net you a MPG either... you could take the same truck, fill the bed up to max payload and maybe lose half a MPG at worst.

I probably shouldn't even have posted anything because these threads are just full of anecdotes and nothing scientific. So here's a video, albeit mainly focused on EV towing, but does a direct comparison of a F-150 without anything in the bed and a F-150 fully loaded with roofing shingles.



If you want to dramatically improve your MPG, figure out a way to improve the aerodynamics on the truck. Unfortunately, there's no way to do that without ruining the aesthetics. But who cares... you don't buy a Raptor for good gas mileage.

The raptor MPG feels insanely low. Full size V8 trucks can get to mid/upper 20s on the highway but ranger raptor gets 18?

I looked into this a bit. It seems the beed lock wheels lower mpg slightly?

Look i get it. Smiles per mile. I have a zl1 camaro and it gets 24mpg hwy and thats 650hp s/c v8. I never really care much about mpg. I drove a whole 4k miles in 9 months. I get the "just dont get a raptor if you care about mpg". But a lot of vehicles that can off road just dont offer the same thrill.

I think a lot has to do with the fact its a twin turbo v6, final gear ratio is 4.12ish and the tires are huge. As much as i want this truck. And i can afford it. This feels insane with gas at 5.50/gal. Ill also road trip this truck to mountains and such for camping.

So hows your mpg on this truck? Is it really this bad? Anything that easily improves it a bit so i can average around lower 20s hwy?

So we’re gonna say it doesn’t take more energy to move a wheel and tire setup that weighs 90lbs vs. 74lbs?

Cause it certainly takes less energy to do that. And much less energy to keep it in motion, especially on a gradual incline.

Give it a try. Drop to a 23lb wheel and look at your fuel economy. There’s a reason racing teams get lightweight wheels, fuel efficient cars see and even more drastic improvement with lighter wheels, etc. It’s physics my man.

You live in one of the more expensive places in the US to live. Gas might be $5.50 a gallon there, but most the rest of us enjoy premium for under $4. I think $5.50 gas should be the least of your worries. Living in socal costs 40-50% more than national average. Just like your z/1 (a great car btw) you don’t buy vehicles like them for the gas mileage. For a little pickup that’s easy to get around it is fun to drive. Ford Maverick gets good mileage and I would guess it’s better than a Prius.

Lowering unsprung weight has a way bigger effect on things like performance and MPG than losing the same amount of weight above the springs, thats pretty common performance knowledge, at least I thought!

These over rated 10 speed transmissions are suppose to give better mpg but they don't. My 3 speed Dodge Dakota with a 3.9L V6 could get 21 mpg on the freeway

And this is the reason I bought a 2.3 lariat. I average 24 mpg's all the time. If mileage didn't matter everyone would get a 7.3 Godzilla truck. If you think the Rapter miles kind of sucks, don't tow with it! You'll cry.

Won’t lie, the MPG isn’t great and your question is a legit concern. I live in SoCal as well and I seem get an average of like 14. I do a lot of town driving, but I’ve never gotten above 17, even on a road trip. It’s a blast to drive, and I’m not going to fret over it, but I did expect better. Costco gas price helps. I read and see videos of people getting 20+, I just don’t get anything near that. Maybe it’s the SoCal ethanol percentage in the fuel mix, IDK. BTW My RR, tires stock, wheels stock bead locks, about 2200 miles, aluminum camper shell on bed.

Did a 100km drive the other day, mix of highway and city driving over 1.5hrs using 98RON - 10.5lt/100km (22.5mpg)

I usually average around 11.5lt-12/100km (20-19.5mpg) per tank unless I’m driving it hard or are off-roading it. I really can’t complain with that given the weight and power.

if you keep it off boost you can definitely get some decent fuel economy…. But seriously, who wants to do that all the

I agree with you but if you spent $200 (made up) per wheel and mounting them ran another $80 (made up) it would take forever to see the benefit financially. Of course I know that’s not the reason you did it; just playing devils advocate.
$7 savings per 1,000 miles driven puts you at well over 100k miles break even.

I love my RR, but yeah, the gas mileage is pretty horrible. I’m averaging 14.9 mpg and I try not to pass 3k RPM. For reference, I also have a Hellcat Charger and it averages 15.6 mpg, so yeah, it’s rough in that department. But in every other way it’s so good that I just forget about the fuel economy, lol

man, remember back in the day when you had old school v8s with carbs. my 65 mustang with a lightly built 302 and 3 speed standard would pop the front wheels up at a stop light but only got about 9mpg because i was always hot rodding it.

the fun outweighed the cost of gas except when i had to drive out of town, stopping for gas 4 times where a normal honda could make the drive to and from on one tank did get old.
