The rubber is getting worn down at this point. almost 70K kms.
the stock tires, 255-70R17 112T Goodyear Wrangler Terrains haven't been the best tire Ive ever had, their wet and cold performance is rated at a B and it shows.
Today, while zooming through the dark in light rain, I hydroplaned so that's enough of those shenanigans. It was a weird event.

What have you guys been using that will fit my needs. High miles mostly highway, moderate amounts of rain, sometimes heavy, and snow/icy conditions for a few months of the year. Basically a southern ontario weather mix. I rarely do offroad, and only see occasional gravel roads. So aggressive tread is only a desire for looks, and would choose an all terrain tire if it had A ratings for wet and cold.

In my mind, you have two choices. Toyo and Toyo. Either AT which is what I will swap once my wranglers are worn( My XJ has only ever since Toyo AT/HT) or Toyo HTs which are for great highway with a little off-road peppered in..

I wanted to love the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Ascent. On paper, it is the "Goldilocks" tire I’ve been looking for: a 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) rating for Idaho winters, aggressive "Cobra" sidewall looks, and marketing that claims it matches the Michelin Defender LTX for highway comfort.

The Good: The engineering here is undeniably impressive.

Ride Quality: These are remarkably smooth. They absorb pot-holes and washboard gravel significantly better than the stock tires. There is zero vibration and the steering feel is excellent—direct and planted.

Performance: I've taken these into dirt and wet conditions where the stock tires would have slipped, and the Ascents just grip. The 3PMSF rating isn't just a sticker; the compound stays pliable in the cold, and the siping eats up wet roads. If you need one tire to handle an unplowed commute and a summer road trip, the capability is definitely there.

The Bad (and the Irony): Here is the deal-breaker for the "silent tire" crowd. Everyone claims this is the quietest All-Terrain tire on the market, or even a "hybrid" highway tire. It is not.

I came from the factory Goodyear Wrangler Territory ATs, which are admittedly mild, but they were nearly silent. I expected the Ascents—with their fancy noise-canceling tread pitch and "Enliten" technology—to match that. They don't.

The Noise: There is a distinct, audible hum at highway speeds (55-75 mph). It isn't the aggressive roar of a Mud Terrain, but it is a constant background drone that simply wasn't there with the stock Goodyears.

The Verdict: If you are coming from aggressive tires like KO2s or Wildpeaks, the Ascent will sound whisper-quiet to you. But if you are coming from factory H/T or mild A/T tires (like the Territorys) and you are chasing pure silence, you will be disappointed. These are fantastic performers, but don't believe the hype that they are "silent." You are definitely paying a noise tax for that cool sidewall and snow rating.

Thanks for that review, Dayton. I'm looking at the Bridgestones for my ride before I make my first annual trip from TX to NH in the summer. Having had KO2s on my last four trucks/SUVs I suspect I will not mind the noise the Ascents might put out.

My dad has those on his Ram and likes them, no issues in our Michigan winters.

I've been a fan of Nokian tires (tyres) for a long time, starting with their excellent snow tires. I've since been impressed with their all-weather tires and more recently their AT tires, nAT for more off-road-worthy performance and their APT for more street-oriented AT tires.

BTW, the winter update was published 8 months ago, in 2025. These tires are still the same today and do not change from one year to another. When it comes to my and other's safety, I will rather trust Tire Rack tests a great deal more than a random person on the internet.

The Workhorse AT2 is totally new for 2025, which is why the 2024 test tells you nothing about it.

If you're going to crap on someone's recommendation, at least make sure you're talking about the actual tire that was recommended.

"On that note, Continental's TerrainContact A/T was pretty decisively the top option in this test. It stands to reason that as the sole category representative for On-Road All-Terrain tires, that it would be a strong contender on paved surfaces, but it was both subjectively and objectively the best out here. The nicest ride, the quickest laps, and the best stopping distances from 60 mph. It does an excellent job reinforcing the importance of looking at category first for tire choice.

I've always been partial to the Michelin Defender LTX M/S.
They came on the 2004 Ford Explore I had when I lived in Denver CO.
Over the course of 18 winters they (and 3 additional sets) I put 300K miles on that Explorer with out any drivability issues. Never did any off roading, but did travel across many gravel roads with no problems.

When the 2024 Ranger's Goodyear Wrangler tires were out, I'll replace them with the Defender LTX or Defender 2 LTX M/S.
