I’m torn between two opposing thoughts/opinions. I’m fascinated and in awe of space. And also dumbfounded at the massive waste of money that could be spent to help mankind right now.

It's not 'wasted money'. A lot of research and technology, not to mention hundreds or thousands of jobs created. It's about 9% of federal spending compared to 28% for health care and 13% for defense.

Any way. I remember the space shuttle mission launches. The first couple of years, it was an all-day affair on the news. After that, it was just a mention on the evening news.

i remember the challenger launch. thats the first one i remember as a kid. i was in third grade and we had just moved to austin from honalulu. the school gathered all the kids into 3 or 4 rooms so we could all watch. we saw the whole thing because the teachers didn't want to turn it off after the shuttle blew up.

i will watch the launches after they are done. not the live feed. just never works out for me to remember to tune in. maybe its psychological from the challenger disaster?

NASA is currently at around 0.35% of the national budget actually... I used to work for them. A big part of my being laid off was they can no longer afford to do multiple big things at once, and are focusing their resources on getting back to the Moon. (My old job was pretty focused on Mars.)

As a current ISS flight controller of nearly 26 years, I did watch the Artemis II launch with my 2.5+ year old daughter while her Mama supported in Mission Control for launch. Spectacular launch with only a few problems that needed to be worked.
As FergyA mentioned, NASA's budget is less than 1% and only a percentage of that small percentage is allocated to the Artemis/Exploration program.
We do a lot with little funding!
