I am looking at two similar Raptors here in Va., one has a line item in the options that says 50 State Emissions, the other one doesn't. There is no extra charge for it, but is it extra crap you don't need or want?

usually that means the one is built to also pass california emissions, plus the normal emissions from other states.

i kind of thought everything was built to cali standards now though

Yeah I thought everything was 50 state for years now.
But then Cali changes their standards regularly, so?

edit: Did some reading, turns out to be an interesting subject. 11 states have (had) stricter emmisions standards than the EPA. Most carmakers found it easier or cheaper to simply make 50 state compliant vehicles and for at least a decade most vehicles have been.

BUT, Trump signed into law in June 2025 that does not allow states to mandate stricter emmisions standards than the Federal EPA standards.
Of course the 11 states immediately sued, and there are numerous other EPA related lawsuits as well. Just a few weeks ago the Administration sued California stating their emissions standards are illegal.

Yes, very interesting. I know way back in the day you could have an issue bringing in a vehicle to California. I bought in Oregon and moved to California and didn’t have any issues.

There are several states besides California that have adopted all or some of the California standards.

I think the biggest change is that California codified the EPA green house emissions regulations and the EPA rolled them all back. So oddly California didn’t seem to have created them.

This will undoubtedly go back to the Supreme Court who originally ruled with the EPA that green house gases were covered under the clean air act.

It would be interesting to see what is different on vehicles that don’t have 50 state emissions.

You could have some short term or possibly long term issues if you move to another state.

I believe that Canada, at least with California, are aligned. So it does do something.

"In view of the above, Environment Canada plans to continue aligning Canadian federal

emission requirements for on-road vehicles with those of the EPA and to consider new

requirements to align standards for off-road engines."

I bought an F150 when I lived in BC and when I moved back to the US to import it they had to physically see the US DOT & US emissions compliance label. That was in 2000.

Yes on both of your answers, we have our own EPA here so being compliant with the 50 states isn't needed unless for the second answer that you want to import it back to the USA.

I know some of my other vehicles actually had meets Canadian standards or in my case meets Ontario code as that's where I live.

Are those brand-new Raptors or used Raptors?
Does one have a tune, and not the other?
Cali is a little stricter on tunes, I think.

Possibly different final assembly plants?
Years ago on Tacomas and 4runners the Fed tag would show inflation pressures for the base tire size from one plant and the actual as equipped tire size from the other plant.

Possibly. How many Raptor assy plants are there? As far as I can tell, all vehicles are produced to be 50 state compliant.
