Not really a "Ranger vs competition" topic, but didn't know where else to put it.

I think this is interesting for a number of reasons. Clearly Ford thinks the 3.0L is proven enough to put in their best-seller, which isn't really surprising given it's basically a bored & stroked 2.7L underneath. The 2.7L (and now by extension, the 3.0L?) is widely known to be highly reliable.

Makes me wonder where this leaves the 3.5L EB, as there's not a ton of delta (power, fuel economy) between the two. And Ford is now putting the 5.0L back in the higher trims.

I have a sneaking suspicion there will probably more powertrain shuffling to come..

Interesting. Wonder if they’re just trying to phase out the 2.7L and streamline powertrain offerings. I’ll be curious to see if it’ll be detuned at all.

Hopefully they make it direct and port injected if this comes to pass.
I would expect that's what they do. Ford seems to be going dual injection with all the motors.

The 2.7 has been Ford's bread and butter for the last few years. This is definitely an interesting turn of events. If the F-150 is losing the 2.7 I wonder if this will be the death of that powerplant across the model lineup. Which leads to other questions about the Ranger and Bronco. The new 2027 Bronco Filson edition has the 3.0...

Makes me think they might remove the 2.7 from the ranger, and just keep the 2.3 and 3.0 for the RR.

Yes, it sounds like it is going away. According to a reliable source on Blue Oval Forums it has to do with emissions regulations for the 2.7.

It doesn’t really make sense that emissions on the 3.0 would be any better than the 2.7. They’re both based on the same motor.

This may ultimately be about cost control. From what I understand, Ford is making moves to unify engine production. Isn’t the concept behind the MPC that all future engines share internal components - hence the term modular?
The 2.7 has different cylinder dimensions from the 3.0 according to a quick search.

This makes a lot of sense. From a business perspective, the more streamlined and simpler you can make production, the more you can control profit margin.

So does that mean the 2.7 Ranger in general will be rare?
In the new F-100 (which will replace the Ranger in North America) you may see a detuned 3.0 replace the 2.7 and the higher output 3.0 in the Ranger/Bronco Raptors. Fits with plans to consolidate engine lines resulting in better economies of scale. Or we might see a higher output 2.3 replace the 2.7.
