I received a OTA software update for the A pillar/visor recall. I thought it required a physical inspection. From the notes included with the update it says if visor lamps quit working to take it to the dealer otherwise recall is complete.
How sad, instead of actually fixing it they just have the BCM kill power if a short is detected. Guess who pays to get it fixed after the warranty runs out.

I try not to be a cynic but…. I have a recall on my truck for possible pinched wires for the lighting on my sunvisor. They are going to fix pinched wires with a software update. Oh and by the way, I don’t have lit mirrors on my xlt. 🤔

I'm cynical. I still have 3 more recalls to address. Two now have been "fixed" with OTA updates plus a couple of general OTA software updates. Wonder how many other recalls will get a software "fix"?

I'm the opposite. I very happy with the fact that I have had two recalls fixed without leaving my driveway. If a software update corrects an issue that less than 1% of owners have experienced and I don't have to get a ride to and from a dealership, I'm okay with that.

As a rule, I’m happy that Ford is doing the recalls, and if they can do them OTA, even better. Our phones and the apps on them get 10x the “updates” that our trucks do and I don’t hear anyone complaining about that. Then again, we aren’t putting our families into our phones and driving it at 80mph either.

‘if I had to guess this will be one of those things that will be fixed, even if out of warranty.

with less than one in a hundred affected, and balancing something could go wrong if they remove the pillar cover, it’s probably a good trade off

it was my understanding that the fault code for the short had to be checked, maybe that can be done remotely.

I had this done at my dealer and they inspected the wires and reprogramed the BCM according to the paperwork.

They do. It's a safety recall, there's no limit on time of responsibility for them to fix it.

This is how I heard it works.
Update BCM to enable it to check for shorts.
If a short is detected, disable the circuit, set codes, then have service inspect/repair wires.
Of no short detected, no problems, no further action need taken.

Now, the part about inspect/repair. There's no remedy as of yet, meaning that if there is a short or bad wiring, your truck is going to sit at the dealer until there is a fix. They will not release a vehicle with a known safety issue.

It's a great fix IMHO. The chances you have this issue are less than 1% and there's no reason for Ford to spend $ inspecting something that can be detected by a computer system. The update literally tells the computer (far smarter than any human) to watch for any type of short and if it detects one, to cut power to that wire and throw a code. That's using technology to our advantage and effectively.
It's the same principle that I deploy every day for clients with large Central Utility Plants. Replace the people sitting around "operating" chillers and pumps and cooling towers with a computer program that can do all of far better and even predict what will need to be done ahead of time based on analyzing thousands of data points every 15 seconds.
Software is far better at things than people, let's use it! Ford is in this instance.

If you have this done at the dealership check the remote entry keypad. It killed mine and required another trip to the dealer to reprogram it. They did so at no cost.

Is it this particular update?
I had a BCM update a few weeks ago for the rear speed sensor that didn't disable the keypad.

Just had it done today and my keypad no longer works after BCM updated
I need to return any how because the bolt holding the front right brake hose bracket is broke off
dealer stated likely at factory missed by QC and PDI, dealer ordered a new knuckle and bolt
So will need to add reprogram of keypad
