A - pillar wiring recall BCM software update

[b-smi91]

I think you meant it gets a new wiring harness if the code is present.

Sir, I am a Ford tech, and it gets a new BCM if code present.

that seems very odd since it is a wiring problem and that is not what the NHTSA bulletin says.

I suppose the BCM could be replaced, but it is the wiring harness that is the cause So it would need to be replaced too.

Just jumped in my truck now and screen said bcm update was done overnight and it was for this. It also stated that if the visor & other lights do not work to bring the truck in. My guess this update shuts it all down if it has a issue.

Which dealer to you work? I'll be sure not to take it there.

ok, got a call early this morning that my Ranger was ready, seems it may have done a bit of sitting around.
Upon pick up I had to get a manager who then got with the technician that did the work…the explanation of exactly what was done is this: used FDRS to check for B1 NOT present, update BCM to latest level.
The manager further explained that they DID NOT have to take anything apart to determine there were no pinched wires, no problems. That’s a big deal because others have had horror stories of damage/grease/fingerprints on their interiors after disassembly/reassembly. There you have it.

So, your truck sat for a while until a tech could to a 10-minute BCM update. If the BCM didn't report a problem, it's likely that they didn't do anything else other than a S/W update.

Well folks, It’s time for me to move on. Thanks so much for all your input, much appreciated!
I traded my Ranger in this morning for something to commute with. All the best to everyone with their endeavors

Why the hate? Just trying to dispel bad information. You use bad grammar and misspell words. I don't point that out. You're probably one of 'those' owners anyway.

More jest, than hate. As for grammar, I graduated from a US school.

Everything I've read says it gets a S/W update that checks for shorts, disables the circuit, and sets a code to get the short repaired. So, I'm just wondering, how is replacing a BCM going to repair an electrical short in the A-pillar?

if the problem is a short in the wiring harness, I could see that the fix might be to replace the wiring harness AND the BCM.

but replacing the BCM by itself does not fix the short.

This popped up this morning, the truck runs fine and the overhead lights are good too.

Mine did it OTA a few weeks ago and lights are good.

A lot more than 100 affected. If Ford was going to repair after out of warranty, they would add an extended coverage notification for this specific recall. (Ford tech)

I wasn’t aware that any recall on any vehicle was subject to the vehicle’s warranty status. Warranties and recalls have always been independent, at least here in the US.

same just did the update and tested both overhead and sun visor mirror lights. they all work so I guess I'm good to go. Now I have to deal with the PCM update. I hope it goes smooth being I have the FP tune.

Safety recalls are always covered, warranty or not. I was getting notices for a cruise control problem for my '95 F150, well into the 2000s.
