2026 Ford Ranger Raptor Long-Term Road Test: 10,000-Mile Update
Interesting how the break in shaved off some quarter mile time. Their test truck ran 14.1 quarter when new, at just 10k, at least in cooler weather they are at 13.9. Trap speed increased by only 1 mph, so it's pushing out about 10hp more across the line, which is likely due to cooler weather.
I suspect the cooler weather is more beneficial for ecoboost because it avoids IC saturation vs. the air density itself. With FI engines, they tend to be less temperature and altitude sensitive since the ECU can get closer to the target air density with boost where NA, you get what you get. I definitely notice much less of a torque hit on FI engines at higher altitudes than NA engines that really start to struggle in some cases (except my Mazda's with their 13:1 compression ratios, that does help a lot, and they seem more consistent like an FI engine).
Also note, there's a ton of Bronco's and Ranger owners who have had to add some coolant to the reservoir over time. I suspect there could be some coolant boil off and possibly consumption in the turbos when used hard. I've had to add coolant twice to mine (not much, a few oz) in the 25k I've owned it but cannot find a single drop of residue anywhere on the engine or under side, so I've not just considered it like oil, small consumption is normal during hard use, large consumption indicates an issue. I saw some coolant consumption over longer periods of time on our mazda 2.5L turbo as well, but that uses an open system.
But it will be interesting to see what that truck does on the 1/4 mile after 40k when they re-test it hopefully in warmer weather to so its directly comparable to the original test when new. Most performance vehicles pick up 1/10th by 40k from wear-in.
They also noted they were looking at the Pro Cal tune for their test truck, so that will be interesting to see if their results mirror everyone else's, about 5/10ths in the quarter mile mostly in the first 1/8 mile (all the gains were 0-60 likely from IC saturation on the back half of the quarter), which is perfectly fine for off-road use since speeds above 60~70 are very rare due to terrain. IC seems net about 1~2/10ths in the back half and pick up 1~2 mph trap by mitigating heat soak on the warmer days.
