I was shocked to see such the cheap non-matching spare tire/rim combination that Ford provided with my 2025 Ranger XLT with 18-inch wheels and 255/65-18 on-road all-terrain tires. The temporary spare is a steel rim with a 235/80R16 Atlas Paraller H/TNB tire, which I'd be scared to drive on. What say you?

Most are like that at least you have a spare. My brother has a car with no spare just tire sealant and a air compressor. Tire patching a 1 inch hole with that.

The spare is within 1% of the diameter of the factory tire size so it's perfectly reasonable to run. As to why it's different and cheap, it's all about cost to Ford and a basic steel wheel and tire that they can use on every Ranger other than the Raptor.

I can't think of a single vehicle which has come with a perfectly matching spare for years aside from Jeeps & Broncos which have them mounted externally from the factory.

Why spend all the extra money on a matching rim and tire as a spare? The spare tire is 100% meant to be temp only, it's not supposed to be a full time wheel. Be thankful Ranger has a full sized spare and not a donut with a speed limit of 55 and a tire width that makes driving on it a dicey proposition. If you want a matching tire, nothing g stopping you from spending $600 for a factory wheel and another $250 for an Oem tire.

F150 Raptors are the only other one I can think of that comes with a matching spare tire and wheel.

Your tire is the same diameter, the wheel itself is a different size. That makes zero difference to mounting. At least it is a full sized tire!
I find it odd that Ford went through the effort to put a different sized rim on the spare tire of the lariat trim and didn’t make it a 18” rim.

so much for economy of scale.

is the lariat Spare rim the same as the raptor? That might make some sense.

you can tell how old I am because my spare rims on my trucks has always been the same size as the regular tires.

and that makes it easy when you get new tires to upgrade your spare. Which you should do at some point just because of age.

interesting thing if you really want rugged off road tires 17” is the better size anyway, more options, more rubber.

I was fooled; I thought when Ford stated "Full size spare tire/wheel" it was going to be like the others. There were few actual models to look at June 2024, so I depended a lot on the online descriptions for my order. I did not see an explanation that the tire and even rim would be a different size. I would have liked the option to purchase a similar tire (and rim) when I ordered.

More Rangers (XL and XLT trims) are build than are Lariats. 17" wheels are the size on the XL and XLT's.

My Subaru Outback Wilderness had an exact matching 5th alloy wheel and tire. Even the dealership was surprised to learn about it.
