So, someone please tell me if I am understanding this incorrectly.
In the launch video they said the Ranger was was made 50 mm wider to accommodate more space in the cabin, bed and engine compartments, etc...
So 50 mm converted to inches is 1.96", so lets just say 2 inches. Does that mean the overall footprint expanded 2" as well? I certainly hope not.

According to Car & Driver, without the mirrors:
The 2021 F150 is currently 79.9" wide.
The 2021 Ranger is 77.8" wide. Add 2 more inches and it would basically be as wide as an F150.
Compared to other midsize, Tacoma and Colorado which are 74.4" and 74.3", respectively.

So i certainly hope they interior and engine bay remodel was 50 mm of "gained" space versus widening out the ranger.
I know I'm not the only one here that is looking to downgrade due to size of their current truck, or i know some don't want anything the size of the F150. The Bronco is even only 74.4" wide. I guess time will tell.

My garage was built somehwere around 1930. With my Ranger, and Wrangler in there there's barely enough room as it is. So, Those extra 2 inches would be a no go for me. Thankfully I have no desire to own the new one right now.

yea i don't blame you. I honestly am waiting to see what GM and Toyota release since 2023 i guess is the year of the midsize haha
I don't know if I would trade in my 2018 F150 for the new ranger if it is just as wide. I wanted a smaller truck lol
But lately i've been questioning if i want to trade in at all.
Ford teased a hybrid or EV version of the Ford Bronco, so idk, I may go that route.
Only reason i didn't put a deposit down on the Bronco already is because I thought we were getting a camper and i wanted somethign with more than 3500 lbs of towing. Now we are looking at Pop-ups... so the Bronco is back on table. I'd have to wait probably till 2023 anyways haha so whats the difference.

I saw a video that said the reason the ranger was widened was because of Volkswagen's specs for the Amarok. I guess it's a joint venture outside the US and Volkswagen wants more engine bay room. Has anyone else heard that?

It's a joint venture between the two companies. From the Ford Media website:
  • Produce a medium pickup truck engineered and built by Ford, for sale by Volkswagen as the Amarok starting in 2022 within the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles lineup
Here's a link to the details. Ford, Volkswagen Sign Agreements for Joint Projects On Commercial Vehicles, EVs, Autonomous Driving | Ford Media Center

The extra width was required in the rear to fit a pallet between the arches in the bed. That was a VW requirement (the current Amarok can do it).

As others have said, the width quoted is mirror to mirror (and it is the same number for the current Ranger). The new vehicle is reportedly 50mm wider than the outgoing model (for the Australian market anyway), not counting the mirrors. That's still 125mm narrower than my Raptor (which is 175mm wider than the current Ranger).

I’m glad mine isn’t any wider or longer than it is - I’d have to move. ?

Yes. It seams that the 6th would be 4 in narrower that an f150 after the extra 2 in is added.

Here's my take on the supposed width increase. The only thing Ford has said so far is that the track increased by 50mm (~2") and because of that they were able to move the rear shocks outside of the frame rails which allows the rear wheel wells to move out as well and you will now be able to fit an international size pallet between the wheel wells. They have NOT said that the interior volume of the cab has changed, at least not yet. When you see that aerial view and some rear quarter views of both the Ranger and Everest it is obvious that the body has been widened over the tires giving it that "Coke bottle" shape. That doesn't mean they increased the width of the cab between the axles.
Ford also wanted to offer V6 engines (along with VW), including the 3.0L V6 Powerstroke Diesel for other markets and the 3.0L V6 EcoBoost for the Raptor and to do that they needed to widen the space between the front frame rails which also pushed out the suspension mounting points and therefore caused an increase in the front track width.
If you go back to the time when Ford announced the return of the Ranger to the North American market there was some discussion about Ford's approach to their world-wide mid-size truck design vs their competition. I remember reading that GM chose to make the Colorado wider for the NA market than the existing truck they sold elsewhere. Toyota did something similar with the Tacoma being wider than the Hilux. Ford chose to use the same width for all markets which is kind of somewhere in the middle of the competition's trucks. That way they could save money by building the same cab for all markets. I suspect there are overall width limits (including mirrors) for some other markets as well which means if you have only one width Ranger for all markets you can't get any wider overall. Since the mirrors are attached to the doors....mission accomplished.
