Anyone more mechanically inclined than me able to explain why some full size trucks get better mileage than midsize?
Not so much mechanics as it is business.

Domestically, they earn more money on an XLT F series than a Lariat Ranger. The Ranger will never sell in F150 numbers.

With the scaled production capacity, investment in tooling/training/etc., they don’t want to sacrifice market share.

They’re willing to disincentivize you away from a midsize even if it doesn’t make sense.

Mainly has to do with gearing.

F-150s are Aluminum body which saves a great deal of weight. As mentioned, gearing, wheel size, transmission, aerodynamic efficiency, and fuel delivery & management all contribute.

Doesn't seem like the ranger is all that much lighter than the f150. I'm really wondering if the 2.3 will even have better numbers than the 2.7. It's not like the 2.3 isn't more than enough. The only concern I have with the 2.7 is the new belt driven oil pump. Does the 2.3 have this? It doesn't seem like the 2.3 has any real issues, and same for the 2.7 presently.

The 2.7 is proven to far exceed the EPA numbers in the F. Mine is legit 26 mixed in CO, CCSB XlTH with the 4wd FX4. I went more than 200 miles yesterday up guanella pass and back down through Georgetown (no, it's not like the real Georgetown in DC) through traffic and with a full load of camping stuff and bikes. I got 26.2 for the whole trip and wasn't chillin at 60mph. The only think that pisses me off a bit is the need for premium here in CO where "regular" is 85. I don't think either 2.3 or 2.7 would be okay with 85, but the Tacomas 3 5 and other NA engines work fine with it.

I'm trying to decide mainly between the 23 Tacoma and 24 Ranger for my wife who is trading in her CX30 (which has been AWESOME). I was hoping to trade if for a CX50, but she drove my f150 and wants a truck now. We need something just a little bigger for kids and dogs etc.

The mpgs and drum brakes are real negatives for the Tacoma as is the throttle response and transmission tuning. I hate Toyotas site and dealerships too. Could be associated with Toyota people. I do like the regular gas and looks/build quality. I'm a little uneasy about the overall durability of their 3.5.

Getting off topic.

FWIW, I am averaging 18 mpg over the last 7,500 miles with my Euro Spec Ranger Raptor with the 3 Liter Ecoboost. Considering I cruise a bit faster on the Autobahn than in the US. I expect I would have slightly better mileage in the US.

Nice - thankyou.

As another data point, my TT RR can just barely touch 9.8 l/100km (24mpg) if driven very gently at 100kph (62 mph) completely unladen. Around town with only short trips mostly (barely gets time to warm up) I'm usually seeing 15 - 16 l/100km (call that 15 - 16 mpg).

When cruising on the back roads at around 80-100 km/h, I do see the numbers get nearer 10 L/ 100km, it seems starting at about 100km/h the s when the consumption starts going up.

I ran 35s (315/70R17 - same General Grabber AT3 I have in the stock size) for about 1,000 km and surprisingly it didn't really have a measurable impact on overall mileage. When I still had my first Gen Ranger Raptor I saw about a 1.5 L/100km impact with those.
