Bigger tank in the Raptor due to the poor mileage is my guess.
I'm sure that's true, but one of the biggest complaints about the 5G is the range (especially if you tow.) If Ford could just make one bigger tank, it seems like the one to use unless there's a technical reason not to.

There are aftermarket fuel tanks for the 5G rangers that double the size to 37gallons. Will likely see those for the 6G but it will effect payload.

Check off one more item on the list for getting the 2024 Ranger to market, The EPA has released the fuel economy numbers. At least something was getting done during the strike!

2.3L 2WD - 21 city / 25 hwy /22 combined
2.3L 4WD - 20 city / 24 hwy / 22 combined
3.0L Raptor - 16 city / 18 hwy / 17 combined

Interesting #'s on the RR. That mileage isn't far off from the F1-150 Raptor. At that point, it seems the bigger truck is the way to go. However, for the non-Raptor based Rangers, just like in previous years, the mileage is impressive.

Gearing is the main culprit, the F150 runs I think a 3.15, 3.31, 3.55 and 3.73. Those higher numbers on F150 are with the 3.31 or 3.15 while the Ranger is running 3.73 and RR is running 4.27:1 ratios. Higher the number the higher the engine will rev at a given speed making it burn more fuel. The 3.0 liter in the RR making 400+ hp doesn't help along with the larger wheels.

The Ranger most likely has a 3.73 rear so it does not feel like a 2.3 4cyl. and will have get up a go.
The 10 speed transmission and turbo also helps.

Ooof 17 combined. I get 22 to 23 hwy in my current tremor and 18 to 19 town.

I've always wanted a ranger raptor, but that is terrible mpg for a small truck.

I'm going to have to see what the new tacoma trd pro and off road get rated at, as I want a sporty truck, but expect low to mid 20s mpg. Otherwise I might as well get a f150.

Really disappointed in these mpg numbers.
Well, not sure if you checked on the Tacoma forums lately but after Toyota officially released their MPG figures......it's crickets......

Ford Ranger 2024 Ranger MPG (EPA) Fuel Economy Numbers Released! Screenshot 2023-12-28 at 8.53.48 AM

Ranger line

2.3L 2WD - 21 city / 25 hwy /22 combined Gas tank size - 18.8
2.3L 4WD - 20 city / 24 hwy / 22 combined Gas tank size - 18.8
3.0L Raptor - 16 city / 18 hwy / 17 combined. Gas tank size - 20.3

Tacoma

SRS 2WD - 19 city / 24 hwy / 21 combined. Gas tank size - 18.2
TRD Off-Road - 19 city / 23 hwy / 20 combined. Gas tank size - 18.2
TRD PRO (TBA - anyones guess but knowing what we see above, doesn't look better)🤷‍♂️
Trailhunter (TBA - same, same - not likely to be better)🤷‍♂️

I'm sure the delay in the TRD Pro and Trailhunter at Toyota is them trying to put a bigger gas tank in that to compete with R-Raptor. Cry all you want about Ford but Toyota going with all 4cylider hybrid motors and smaller gas tanks compared to their previous gen is the real disappointment!

My Powerboost F150 has 3.73's and is rated at 24/24/24. It won't get that at 75mph but does very well around town.

Not just that but all trims of Taco (apart from TRD OR and TH) come with the hideous plastic skirt which is the saving grace for that terrible gas milege. Once ya remove that air dam, the milege will drop at least by a gallon so real world milege would be around 19mpg and under with a smaller tank. The hybrid might beef it up a little bit but not worth spending $50k for a mid size truck at that point.

TFL tested this and found the MPG dropped by less than 1 with the air dam removal.

I removed the air-dam on the 2016 GMC Canyon 2.8L diesel and only saw a couple tenths drop in mileage but that drop might not have even been from the removal because so much influences mileage from every drive.

I think TFL Truck got 24 with the Tacoma Limited. Also, those numbers aren't hybrids, just standard 2.4 Turbos. Hybrid numbers will be out in the spring ... but for sure expensive. Land Cruiser leaked numbers with the hybrid powertrain were 27mpg, and it's heavier. I guess we'll see. I think (except for the GM twins) the turbo 4s are pretty much in parity. I hated the 18G tank on my 5G Ranger, I was really hoping for better. Sucks the Tacoma has the same. I think it's for Payload.

Do I look like a fool
I just completed a 3000km trip and with sensible driving achieved an average 22mpg over the 3000km
Tank range here in oz is around 600km whatever that is in old money.
not bad for a forged race engine.
