Has anyone changed oil yet on the new generation Ranger with the 2.3 engine? Am wondering if the dimension changes to the Gen 6 Ranger have made the oil filter access easier or harder? I know what it's like having to access the filter on the previous generation through the left front wheel well but with the front wheels on the new generation being moved further forward what is it like to access the filter now. Also, does the 2.3 engine use the plastic engine oil drain plug?

I did the break in oil change on mine last Saturday. I have the 4x4 XL and there is a plastic molded aero plate ( I would not call it a true skid plate) that is held in place by 6ea 15mm head bolts. Aluminum oil pan with 15mm head drain bolt.

Oil flows relatively easy but there is a wire harness on a cross beam than may get a splash of oil. I installed a Fumoto while I was in there. Even with a Fumoto Valve installed, one is going to have to remove that plastic molded aero plate each time for access. No way to snake your hand up there otherwise.

Oil filter access is not quite exactly like the 23 and back from what I gather. The fender liner is like one piece that goes the full half circumference of the wheel wheel. There does seem to be a cut out divit where the oil filter is on the other side and removing one of scrivit near it and you can pull back enough to get access to remove and install the filter. To get direct access on the filter with an extension and filter wrench cap, kind of have to put the filter wrench cap on first and the snake through some hard brake lines to get the extension on. Once the filter is loosened, have to then take everything off it and then reach back in and unscrew and remove by hand. The funnel drain system seem to work ok.

One observation I made is that I removed the oil filter first before draining the pan. Oil will steadily heavy drip out the oil filter mount until the pan is drained. So I would recommend doing the pan drain first before the oil filter.

Also did it on the ground and clearance was tight and will probably try it next time on some ramps.

I know this is probably worthless to most with no pictures but maybe will give a primer of what to expect first time doing a 2.3L Ranger.

What a stupid design for this 2.3. I did first oil change today total pain. The filter is in tight space in wheel well doable but makes a mess the factory oil filter cather/deviter is useless not a drop made on it. Front suspension was dripped all over because I could not keep a good grip pulling filter out of the liner. And on the drain side I would suggest wrapping the wire harness that is directley in the oil path of the plug in aluminum foil. It is a metal plug no crush ring just an o ring built into plug. I thought it wad over kill with the 6 bolts to pull the belly pan.

Has anyone tried an oil vac to take it out the dipstick? it sounds like that will be much easier on this one but still will have to deal with the filter.

Have done about 4 oil changes so far and can say it gets better once you learn how to manipulate the oil filter out the wheel well side without making a mess. I find once you start to spin the oil filter off and it starts to drain down the diverter chute, just leave if for a minute on the threads and let it drain as much as possible. Then once off the thread boss, tip the open end up and just pull out.

As to the drain plug, I installed a Fumoto Valve and now do not have to worry about any drain splashing on the frame or wire harness.

I've done two oil changes and agree with allowing the filter to drain before removing and then tipping it up. Haven't had any issues with a mess. It's tight but definitely doable with some patience.

just changed mine today , I Googled the capacity of the 2.3 ecoboost and one site said 5.7 quarts and other site said 6 quarts, I put 5.7 in and I was just below the add mark I was puzzled same size oil filter, so had to add 6.25 quarts, it's my first oil change at 883 miles ,inspected the oil and had a very few small amount of metal shavings ,but that's normal!!

It is 6 quarts. The 5.7 quarts I believe is for the 5G. Also, suppose to waiting 15 minutes after engine shutdown to check oil level.

Hey Hootbro gtsy I added the 6.25 and it was at the full mark just below the top hole on the stick ,it's a must to change the factory oil between 700 and 1000 miles !!

First oil change that is !! I'm going to change the next at 2500 miles and then the 3th at 4000 miles and there after ,I was watching a video on YouTube and it a MUST to NOT let your oil get dirty because of the TURBOCHARGER, your talking about 1500 or better for a new turbo !!

Yeah Hootbro I did and had to add about .25 of a quart kind of strange, by the way on your first oil change did you have a VERY small amount of metal shavings from your motor!!
