As chasc mentioned, and I have reviewed videos of an XLT with advanced towing package and Lariat without advanced towing package, the light next to the tailgate handle is tied to the Advanced Towing Package. At least we all know now. ?

I find that some factory packages are worth it. In this case the Trailer Tow Package is $495. For $330 more the Advanced Tow Package has the hitch and adds Trailer Brake Controller, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Reverse Park Aid with Trailer Guidance, and as I just found out, the light next to the tailgate handle. The $330 spread alone covers the cost of a trailer brake controller and this light assembly, much less one's time or cost of labor to install after the fact.

Without knowing about the light in the tailgate, I elected to order mine with Advanced Tow Package for this reason.

I found where i had seen that tailgate light. My father in laws king ranch f150 has a tailgate light

My XLT has the light and the trailer backup assist. As stated it probably does have something to do with the backup feature.

You have a Lariat without the zone light next to the tailgate handle? A picture of your tailgate would be useful.

My reference picture is taken from a Lariat review on YouTube.

I have a lariat WITH the zone lighting, my truck doesn't have the Advanced Trailer Package or the FX4 pack.
This is the best picture i have of the rear end ... but you can see there isn't a bulge for the light
