The Raptor is undeniably awesome but, the 24 tacoma off road and the pro are going to be impressive too. They're just different flavors..

Will the Ranger Raptor be compared directly with the new Tacoma's? Those old Tacomas with the 5 (or is it 6 speed) transmissions were terrible, not to mention gas mileage.

What gen Tacoma are you talking about? I owned two 2nd gen Tacoma - 2008 v6 TRD Sport PreRunner and a 2011 v6 TRD Off-Road 4x4. Both had the 4.0L v6 and both were great trucks.

Comparing the Tacoma to the Raptor is like comparing the Corolla to the... well, Raptor.

They're not even playing the same game.

I'll give Toyota credit for their marketing though, they've even got their buyers talking up drum brakes and outdated drive trains like they're an upgrade because Toyota told them they were.

It's like when Chevy was telling everybody that aluminum wouldn't work in a truck body when they were just really, really far behind in technology and playing catch-up.

Not sure where the Carolla reference came from, but what the Tacoma does have is a lot of aftermarket support. It certainly compares very well with the current Ranger, and it you want to throw some money at it you can significantly improve it. For the off-roading I do, my Tacoma went everywhere my Ranger FX4 goes.

When I owned my Tacoma, I never even thought about the drum brakes. The truck stopped just fine. My Ranger probably stops better, but I never had any complains with the Tacoma stopping.

Outside of that the Raptor beat its in numbers down every column. Better clearance. More power. Hell, the Tacoma doesn't even have a front locker option.

But I am sure the tacobro's will be swooning and grasping at straws because they get space shuttle redish pink front seats.

The off road will have ventilated seats ( damn has it been hot so far ) option most likely and yes, more torque. Better mpg and running on 87 octane. I kind of like how the display is higher on the dash to keep my eyes closer to the road. Have heard the raptor's infotainment is fidgety although, nothing an eventual update couldn't remedy and we all expect that Toyota's reliability and resale value will proceed it considering this tech has been in use. Mind you both vehicles are technically new generations. Anywhere near 25 mpg is something I will greatly appreciate.

The raptor from reviews averages 15-16 on 93. Honestly getting 16-17 average with my 2020 off-road with 33s. The 24 off-road with I-max ought to get around 25 with 87 octane (with 33s ). I'm a peasant so that is attractive to me.

I was going to buy a 2021 TRD Pro Tacoma a couple of years ago. Went down to the dealership with full intentions on purchasing that day. I gave it a test drive just to make sure, and let me tell you, it was what saved me from making a big mistake. I hated everything about it. I think the nail on the coffin wasn't even the driving aspect, it was being surrounded by cheap hard plastic and the reverse camera that was probably in 480P. I couldn't justify spending 55K for it and walked. I think the salesguy was kind of surprised, but didn't make that big of a fuss, as it probably sold a few hours later.

A couple months later, the ROW Ranger Raptor revealed, with Farley saying it was coming to North America, and the rest is history.

The funniest part of the new TRD Pro is those suspension seats. All that engineering just to give your seat a couple inches of movement. What a useless gimmick.

The Tacoma will sell well as it always does. The new hybrid power train will appeal to a lot of people and isn’t a slouch either (~360HP). It will also coast on reputation, and the Cult of Toyota. Make no mistake it will outsell the Ranger without a doubt.

But none of that really matters. Car brands are not sports teams that you need to cheer for. Outselling a competitor brand doesn’t make your purchase more justified or worthwhile. It doesn’t make you the better consumer. All that matters is that you buy the right vehicle for you personally and that you’re happy with it.
