It will be snowing tonight in Pennsylvania and I have yet to get my Ranger out in the snow.

Estimated 3-4 inches overnight so it will be the first somewhat substantial snowfall here if it holds up.

I have a 2025 Ranger XLT and I am wondering what Slippery mode gets me vs 4H for example (or is it virtually the same thing).

Thanks in advance!

Basically, the only difference I can tell is it modulates throttle so you can't spin yourself out as easily if you aren't used to driving in snow or on ice. The two big snow storms I've used it in, my opinion is very good. Combined with traction control and 4x4, it lets you concentrate on other drivers and the weather rather than micromanaging your grip in very marginal conditions.

The last vehicle I felt this confident driving 'normally' in heavy weather was my manual WRX STI with hakka s snow tires.

I haven’t used it ā€˜yet’ in my RR in snow but I do utilize it during torrential rain. And I used to utilize every winter in my previous F-150 in snow. It was my favorite setting - it worked great.
Kinda think of like an ECO mode for the snow. It’s keeps the truck from getting away from you via shifting and monitoring & dictating traction control appropriately. Really keeps the wheel spin at bay & softens the shifting hence the ECO in snow comment. I’m sure there’s way more scientific & engineering ways of saying it.

Like Flak said above it takes some of the edge off so you can pay a little more attention to the windshield & windows.

I have never used it, but according to this dealer page Slippery Mode can lock diffs below 25 mph. That seems like a very dubious claim, locking diffs on slick roads is NOT advisable, that will promptly put you in a ditch.

I have snow tires and use 4A normally in my RR and switch to 4H if the roads are truly bad, all in Normal Mode. I don’t mind and actually enjoy a little wheel spin. I miss not being able to do proper hand brake turns like in my older trucks. My LC200 had a Second Gear Start button that actually locked out 1st gear, which worked stellar for normal snow driving, I don’t think Ford programming does that.

I have watched some YouTube videos on this topic, some say it is the same as 4A (which I highly doubt as my XLT trim doesn't have 4A). I was curious to see if it automatically puts it directly into 4H. I would assume trim and capability comes into play as well (Raptor slippery != XLT Slippery for example). I guess I will find out tomorrow morning!

It limits throttle input and turns up traction control to 11. It's like a practical limp mode to reduce wheel spin in inclement weather. I think it's a little too much for light rain when the roads never really lose that light coating of oil, but it did keep me from losing traction in 2H. I think it'd be stellar in snow and ice.

engine and transmission optimised to reduce wheel spin with a faster acting traction control setting for enhanced grip and control in low-grip situations
4H is advisable only if you know you remain on slippery surface; if mixed, you risk serious damage to your transmission. 4A is norm in those circumstances

I know when I switch mine to slippery it automatically engages 4H.

Then be careful to use only when you need it or move to 4A
Lariat doesn't have 4A. I only use it when we get a couple inches of snow and they haven't plowed yet.

I also have a 25 xlt. and I used it for the slushy roads. it does automatically shift into 4h, but you can shift it back into 2h. and I did notice the turbo doesn't spool as fast, to help with the wheel slipping, so tc doesnt need to kick in. but I only used it for about 15mins in 2h lol

EDIT: These pics are from the owners manual for the second of non raptor. E.L.R.D. is available is all drive modes below 40 KmPH
