I made an initial post in the wheel & tire fitment thread when I first installed these about a month ago. But I figured I would give a more detailed analysis of these tires and size now that I've had some time with them.
Size: 255/80/17 often referred to as Pizza Cutters are a true 33" tall tire, but are only 10" wide. Thus allowing them to fit on a stock +55 offset wheel without rubbing the knuckle or the wheel well.I had been interested in this size for a while because you seem to get the best of both worlds in terms of having a tall tire while also being able to save a little bit of weight and have less rubbing issues by being a skinner tire.
The particular tire I went with are the Hankook Dynapro XT. I was attracted by their light weight and they also run slightly small for size at 33" tall and 9.7" wide. Whereas most tires in this size are around 33.1 Tall and 10.1" wide. Bonus points for being made in the USA, at least in the size I got. Walmart still has these at a pretty good rollback price of $261/ tire in case someone wanted to take advantage of the deal.
Fitment: These tires fit great without any rubbing issues whatsoever, I have tried to make them rub by trying forward and reverse at varying angles and inclines off-road and haven't been able to make them rub. However, the Hankooks are slightly small for size, so if you go with another brand like the Falken Wildpeaks that run wide for size, you may have some slight rubbing on stock suspension. But I don't think it would rub anything important, most likely just the felt wheel liner or something.
Weight: They weighed in on my scale 48.2 lbs. I am running these on some Bronco Big Bend wheels which at 23.25 lbs, I'm pretty sure are also the lightest factory Ford wheels that will fit our trucks. The total weight of the wheel and tire combo is 71.45 lbs which is only a 14.65 lb increase over my factory STX wheels and tires. Not too bad for going up 2" in tire diameter and from an SL to E rated tire.
Ride Comfort: My biggest concern with going with this size is that all of the 255/80/17 tires are 10 ply/ E rated. I had done tons of research on the topic and found plenty of people with positive reports of running E rated tires on midsize trucks, but nearly just as many people that said they were too stiff and rode like a dump truck. However I was pleasantly surprised by the ride quality. After doing a chalk test, I am running these at 34psi front and 33 psi rear and I find them very smooth and comfortable. They ride nearly identical to the SL rated 285/70/17 tires I had on my F150 previously.
Fuel Economy: I think I probably lost about 2 mpg or so going with these tires. But it has been really difficult to determine due to having so many super windy days this year. I can still get 24-25mpg on straight highway driving if the temperature is warm and not much wind.
So after 1 month of use, I am quite happy with these tires and would 100% buy again.
