I made an initial post in the wheel & tire fitment thread when I first installed these about a month ago. But I figured I would give a more detailed analysis of these tires and size now that I've had some time with them.

Size: 255/80/17 often referred to as Pizza Cutters are a true 33" tall tire, but are only 10" wide. Thus allowing them to fit on a stock +55 offset wheel without rubbing the knuckle or the wheel well.I had been interested in this size for a while because you seem to get the best of both worlds in terms of having a tall tire while also being able to save a little bit of weight and have less rubbing issues by being a skinner tire.

The particular tire I went with are the Hankook Dynapro XT. I was attracted by their light weight and they also run slightly small for size at 33" tall and 9.7" wide. Whereas most tires in this size are around 33.1 Tall and 10.1" wide. Bonus points for being made in the USA, at least in the size I got. Walmart still has these at a pretty good rollback price of $261/ tire in case someone wanted to take advantage of the deal.

Fitment: These tires fit great without any rubbing issues whatsoever, I have tried to make them rub by trying forward and reverse at varying angles and inclines off-road and haven't been able to make them rub. However, the Hankooks are slightly small for size, so if you go with another brand like the Falken Wildpeaks that run wide for size, you may have some slight rubbing on stock suspension. But I don't think it would rub anything important, most likely just the felt wheel liner or something.

Weight: They weighed in on my scale 48.2 lbs. I am running these on some Bronco Big Bend wheels which at 23.25 lbs, I'm pretty sure are also the lightest factory Ford wheels that will fit our trucks. The total weight of the wheel and tire combo is 71.45 lbs which is only a 14.65 lb increase over my factory STX wheels and tires. Not too bad for going up 2" in tire diameter and from an SL to E rated tire.

Ride Comfort: My biggest concern with going with this size is that all of the 255/80/17 tires are 10 ply/ E rated. I had done tons of research on the topic and found plenty of people with positive reports of running E rated tires on midsize trucks, but nearly just as many people that said they were too stiff and rode like a dump truck. However I was pleasantly surprised by the ride quality. After doing a chalk test, I am running these at 34psi front and 33 psi rear and I find them very smooth and comfortable. They ride nearly identical to the SL rated 285/70/17 tires I had on my F150 previously.

Fuel Economy: I think I probably lost about 2 mpg or so going with these tires. But it has been really difficult to determine due to having so many super windy days this year. I can still get 24-25mpg on straight highway driving if the temperature is warm and not much wind.

So after 1 month of use, I am quite happy with these tires and would 100% buy again.

I think you've helped me decide on what I am going to get when I need new tires, just trying to figure out what offset to get a little bit of poke. Thank you.

Should be fine running less offset as long as you have a level kit. If on stock suspension I think you'd probably want to stick to +55 offset.

I should be good on clearance. 2.5 leveling kit. I need to do some research to confirm whether or not "x"mm offset will give the same stance on 2 different width of rims. I think a lot of the guys go for -35mm, -25mm, -12mm, 0mm on 9inch wide wheels, so I believe I have to account for the difference on a 8 or 8.5inch wheel.

255/80R17 on stock suspension. That gives me a whole new rabbit trail to go down…

Thank you 🤣
It really feels like a bit of a cheat code. Nice gain in ground clearance, not a huge hit to mpg, tougher tire and still a smooth ride. All without even having to change the stock suspension.

I am still going to level the truck at some point. I already have Eibach leveling struts that I got on sale a couple months ago. But I'll probably wait a while before I install those as I'm pretty happy with the truck as is for now.

That's the ticket! I want to go taller, not wider. These look like a perfect option.
How do they sound? Is there a lot of road noise? That's one of my concerns with going to aggresive.
Offset can get confusing. IIRC, a positive offset pulls the tire closer in. So, a +55 will be closer to the knuckle than a +30. If I understand it correctly, a +30 will give 1" of poke compared to a +55.

The fact you're running those on completely stock suspension is really cool. I wonder how much the size of your particular tires plays into this? Would something like a Toyo or Nitto still fit without modifications, even though they’re a hair wider? 🤔

I find them really quiet so far. But at just under 1k miles, pretty much every tire is quiet. So the jury is still out on that one. Also I have some wind noise issues I need to address that are coming from the driver's window and mirror area, so I may be missing some noise coming from the tires.

Here is a pretty good review from a guy running these exact same tires on a jeep.

I think they would work fine, I was about to go with the Toyos if I didn't find the Hankooks on sale. If they do rub, it would be extremely minor and you could probably just spend a few minutes to bend/ push/ zip tie the wheel well liner out of the way slightly.

Nice write up and well done on the setup! That's a really good look all the way around and a much more economical route than the plunge some of us have taken : )

I'm a huge Hankook fan too, I've run them on sports cars and performance sedans for years and get a good chuckle out of how well they perform at often times 1/3 the cost of a Michelin/Conti/Pirelli.

Well done all the way around!

I think this is very cool, but I just can't see myself riding on 10-ply tires. I'd love to get an extra inch of clearance, but I think I will settle for 255/75r17 and be happy with an extra half inch. Anyways, great information shared!

255/75/17 is a great size! That's what were originally mounted on these Bronco wheels when I bought them and I ran those for 6 months. Was a noticeable boost in height over the 255/70/17s and I had no discernible loss of mpg. That should've been the stock size for our trucks IMO.
