The short shifter in the Raptor is fine enough but I just wish the detents were more positive and that they added a manual shift kick over for it.

Thats what I didnt like is the soft detents and too easy to go to a gear not intended.

I've also driven both (have a raptor but was given an xlt as a loaner while the raptor was in the shop) and they're both fine. The standard shifter in the xlt is definitely more intuitive as it feels more like other shifters. I watched a bunch of reviews of the raptor before I bought it and they almost always mentioned they didn't like the shifter so I was expecting not to like it but after living with it for a few months now I actually don't mind it at all. There is a slight learning curve but I can quickly shift without looking without issue.
This was a concern of mine prior to purchase, but I’m with you- it took about three trips and I was totally fine with the shorter selector. I wouldn’t want a taller one now. The short one stays out of my way and it’s super easy to use without looking.🍻👍🏻

The short shifter does have a manual shift button on it.
That gives your paddle shifts full control.

That’s interesting that you were also confused about which shifter was in which ranger. I too saw many conflicting photos/videos and then finally realized after seeing them in person that only the lariat and raptor had the short shifter. At first, I hated the short shifter. It reminded me of some of the European style ones.

Also, having the regular shifter in my bronco, I didn’t think I could get used to it. But, after living with the raptor for nearly 5 months now, it’s perfectly fine. It takes a few times to get used to the proximity of gear selections.

But overall, I kind of enjoy it now. It is certainly less intrusive, but you cannot lean your arm on the center console and put your hand on the gear selector like you might do with the taller shifter.
