The 2.7 has both port and direct fuel injection. I think the 3.0 only has direct injection. I wouldn’t be surprised if the 3.0 is upgraded to have both.

I thought they were very different engines, with different blocks (aluminum vs cgi), connecting rods, pistons, heads, everything.

I hear the speculation that the 2.7 is dead and it makes sense, but I also heard that ford was contracted to a builder for the 3.0 for a couple more years (or committed to the factory or whatever), so I’m holding out some hope that the 2.7 will live on for those couple of years in lower volume models like the Ranger and others, then continue after that when ford has more options for production.
This video has a lot of good information on the F-150 3.0L and it is fairly objective regarding what it covers. Especially considering that there isn't much information from Ford on the version of it going into the F-150.

Gotta say, makes me a bit nervous. Just bought a 2026 2.7L and cam phasers failed at 2k miles... I have a 100k mile / 10 year powertrain warranty and now I'm wondering what happens if in, say, 9 years, my engine has some other catastrophic issue, and they don't make this engine anymore?

There will be plenty of them sitting in salvage yards and at engine rebuilders. IMO, the most important thing to do, other than good maintenance, is replace the wet belt that drives the oil pump at 200k miles out of caution.

The problem is that the F-150 accounts for the vast amount of 2.7L V6 uses. Below is a breakdown of 2025 sales numbers for Ford vehicles that offer the 2.7L as an engine option. Estimates are that 60% of Bronco sales have the 2.7L in them and that 10%-15% of Ranger sales have the 2.7L engine. Historically, around 30%-40% of F-150s have the 2.7L engine. This splits 2.7.L use at 280,000 with F-150, 87,000 with the Bronco and 8,500 with the Ranger. IMO, the F-150 is the determining factor as to whether the 2.7L remains for the long term.

Ford Model2025 Total U.S. SalesContext of the 2.7L V6 Engine
Ford F-Series (F-150)828,832 unitsThe 2.7L served as the standard high-volume engine across lower and mid-tier trims (like XL and XLT). Note that total F-Series figures include the Super Duty line, but the vast majority are F-150s.
Ford Bronco146,007 unitsThe 2.7L V6 is the upgraded engine option above the standard 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder. (Note: This excludes the Bronco Sport, which does not offer the V6).
Ford Ranger70,960 unitsThe 2.7L V6 is offered as an available premium engine upgrade on higher trims like the XLT and Lariat.
Ford Edge3,040 unitsA legacy application. Production ended in early 2024, meaning 2025 numbers only represent the final trickle of leftover dealership inventory. The 2.7L V6 was exclusive to the Edge ST performance trim.
If only the F150 was the determining factor, we would have never had the 2.3 in the Ranger.

The 2.3L has been in a lot of other vehicles and never in a full sized truck to my knowledge. Also, the turbocharged 2.3L is a viable option in a mid sized truck. I can see why Ford is likely retiring the 2.7L and I think the 3.0L is going to be a better engine in the long run. If the video is right and its peak torque comes on around 2,100-2,200 RPM this will make it the better engine of the two, IMO. The 3.0L has an aluminum lower block and a CG iron upper block. This will save a lot of weight while keeping the overall block strength high and promote better cooling.

I got the Ranger XLT with 2.7. If the 3.0 had been an option, I would have gotten that. I loved the Raptor, but didn't want (or need) all of the additional Raptor features. Lariat would have been nice too. But XLT fit my needs best. It sounds stupid, but the 3.0 with the dual exhausts, and the Lariat's double glove box and side step would have been great.

According to Ford Authority, every engine in the Ford lineup has PDFI, but not this one. What is the Forum's opinion on that?

My guess is that dual port injection will be added when the 3.0L is refreshed. The 3.0L in current use is basically the same core design that debuted in 2016. There have been some improvements along the way but not in a major way. My guess it that it hasn't been refreshed because it hasn't been produced in high volumes until now for use in the F-150. I would bet the farm that a 2nd gen version will be coming soon now that it is replacing the 2.7L V6. This happened with the 2.7L as part of its 2018 refresh after it was launched in 2015.

The 3.0 has been an optional, high-performance, engine for the Ranger, Bronco, Explorer and I think the standard powerplant for the police interceptor Explorers for a few years. I would be absolutely shocked if Ford doesn't add port injection with it taking over the F-150 fleet now.

I think the 3.0L will be very reliable in detuned applications like the F-150, Lariat and lower Ranger models, Broncos. etc. At 325hp it won't be breaking a sweat.

Prior to '25 or '26, the Ranger 2.3L was DI only, even though the Mustang 2.3L had PDFI.

OK, so if they do away with the 2.7 as seems inevitable, and they put a 3.0L EcoBoost in as the higher option for non-Raptor Rangers, what will they do to differentiate the Raptor?
3.5 L EB, or just play with the tunings on the 3.0?
Go with some other new design?
