Worked at a dealership years ago and we had a ballpoint pen test. if you could "scribble" the pen across the crack and no where along did the pen find a spot where it clicked/caught on anything, then it was a stress crack and could be warrantied. Any place a stone or something damaged the glass, there will be a noticeable spot where the pen catches, you'll feel it, and that's where the impact happened = not warranty.
Mine cracked at about 8K miles. No visible chip. I was pretty hopeful at the dealership until the warranty lady ran her pen along the crack. Sure enough there was a chip. Replaced by Safelite through comprehensive with a $500 deductable.

Yeah, they looked at it for a while and agreed it was a stress crack. I actually saw the crack start. I was at a red light in Moab, just starting to turn right and suddenly it appeared right in front of my face from the left edge. No rock chip.

Of course, now I have two chips in my new windshield. I'm convinced the Ford glass is weak. I've driven miles and miles all over the country and tons off road and I've had as many crack/chips in this Ranger's windshield as in three previous Subarus combined.
Subaru glass is soft as well. Most all autoglass is rather soft these days.

Mine cracked on my Lariat early on. My insurance covered glass. Had to fight with Safelite which seems to monopolize insurance windshield claims. The tried to use a non-OEM at first, took a long time to even get it or the OEM to dealer. Came to the dealer's site to replace and refused to let me watch them do it - I was just curious. They were asshats all the way around took a couple months to get it completely resolved. You can see the crack just at the bottom. Hope it doesn't on my Raptor.

There is windshield protection available. I’ve had it on several vehicles already. It works well and protects the windshield really well. Takes some maintenance but worth the expense.

Basically PPF for the windshield. Sucks with only 1 year warranty whereas PPF is 5-10 years or lifetime.

Actually it’s more than PPF. It’s thicker and much more pliable. I’ve run it on everything from our TTRS, Porsche, GRC , etc and it’s saved the windshields from multiple strikes that would have ultimately cause windshield breakage. It last for 3-6 years with proper maintenance.

Second time I drove the truck a stone hit in the upper left corner. Was under 150 miles when it happened. Had the chip repair done by Safelite.

I got a chip at about 5000m that became a full windshield crack when the first snow settled on it. Then while being repaired at Safelite, the removed windshield fell off the rack and dented and scratched the truck. Was just quoted $2300 to fix it. Great luck with this truck so far. Can only get better...I hope.

Safelite is paying for that? Right?

Is that a rock chip towards the top? Same happened to me on my last truck so close to the edge. The worse is when you drive a couple hundred miles to a dealership to buy a new car and get a huge rock chip on the drive home. Did that with a new Lexus a decade ago. Sucks, and I feel your pain.

This happened when i went to buy my wife a new escape in 2018. She had a 2015 ford escape se but wanted a tiranium. A dealership about 50 miles away had the exact set up she wanted to i went to swap her car for the 2018 titanium escape while she was shopping out of town with her mom. Driving home, a freaking rock hit the top of the glass about 7 miles from our house.

The dealer said there is nothing they could do since it was a rock crack.

I hate trucks hauling anything with no tarp because the cops won't do anything even though its supposed to be a state law to cover loads, yet we still get rock chips if you are with 500 feet of a truck on the highway. And the insurance says oh well, we will cover it even though it happens multiple times a year so your insurance cost has to be climbing
