I purchased a slightly used Ranger that came with the ford tune, can I still use 87 and not experience the gains or will it damage it? Please don’t say you should or why buy if you can’t afford the 91 etc etc. I want to know since at times in my area the difference can be over $1 per gallon

With the Ford Performance tune you must run 91+ to see the gains in performance. Running regular gas routinely will probably be bad for the engine. If you Must use 87 once in a while, you'll be fine, just don't get on it heavy, the truck will still compensate for the octane. It won't be a disaster. But don't do it on a regular basis.

If you have the tuner device, just roll back to OEM settings if you are going to run anything less than 91 octane.

Also note that on the factory cal, while you can run 87 your going to lose 30-40 hp on 87 over 91. Thats typical of turbo engines.

For example Mazda says the 2.5L SkyActive G Turbo loses 27 hp on 87 vs. 91 and thats just a turbo 4 in a sporty daily driver SUV thats not necessarily a high performance engine.

Most people with Raptors expect to run premium even on the stock calibration and the 3.0L is designed around premium fuel for optimal operation, weather its the stock calibration or the Ford Performance Pro Cal.

With the Pro Cal your just giving up the ability to run anything below 91 all together. For most Raptor owners, thats worth 50 HP / 106 lb-ft more on the engine side and better transmission tuning on the drivetrain side.
