I know I can get a Ridgeline and I probably won't have any issues with it just like I haven't had any issues with my civic. Thing is, I want a truck to use for work but also want to take it out to the sand dunes to have fun with. Are the cam phaser issues a big thing or just a small issue with a loud vocal minority?

There's been tons of videos made about this truck and never saw anyone mention this being a big issue. It was mostly the wrinkly leather on the seats and other minor issues. Nothing like the tons of recalls the maverick got. (Another truck I wanted but too many recalls for my liking)

Worst case scenario if I buy this truck and I get the rattle, how long can I continue running the truck? Can I keep going till it craps out and i'll be fine since it'll be under warranty?

I don't know much about cars other than changing a tire and brake pads. The rest I have no clue so any help would be appreciated.

Couple things:
  • Cam phaser issue normally happens very quickly. Sub 3k miles.
  • If it happens anywhere in 30k miles it's a factory warranty fix.
  • You can buy an extended warranty that will cover over 100k miles and can be canceled at any time and are rather affordable and backed by Ford.

Don't worry about it and if you are worried about it, get the extended warranty and then really don't worry about it.

There is conflicting info, such as 'it's not a problem on the 2.7, it's only the 3.0 Raptor' and 'Ford fixed it with a new design', even 'a little rattle on startup is no big deal' to 'any rattle will blow the engine'.

So, just get it with the 2.3 at never worry about cam phasers.

If you are only using this forum to determine the answer about cam phasers (or any mechanical concern), just remember that r6g forum members here make up a very small minority of overall ‘24 R/RR owners and although we can tend to be vocal its very likely a vast vast majority of owners are not going to experience any issues.

Overall, Im not losing any sleep over cam phasers on my 2.7. if anything goes wrong Ive got both mfg & extended warranty in the event there isnt a TSB or recall.

I agree. I wanted to learn more about cam phasers and that I won't have to pay out of pocket if something happened. But as long as it's under warranty I shouldn't lose sleep over it.

Don't be put off by these idiots who are making a mountain out of a mole hill. It could happen to any truck you buy. It's got a PowerTrain Warranty so you get a loaner while your is fixed if this or any issue happens that keeps your truck from being available to you.

What? Is this true? I never received a loaner when my truck was brought in to fix a warranty issue. What are the details on this?

It depends on the dealer, some provide loaners and some don't. My dealer provides loaners, it may be a truck or a Focus? I don't care any loaner is better than nothing.

I'm having the same dilemma deciding between 2.3 or 2.7. Each has it's own faults. The 2.3 with carbon buildup and the 2.7 with cam phasers. With the 2.3 you'd need to have the intake manifold pulled and have the valves cleaned. Since Ford decided not to even offer a valve cleaning service you'd have to find a shop competent with this or risk doing it yourself. The 2.7 needs the engine pulled to replace the cam phasers and that opens up a world of possible issues given, in my 50 years of service department experiences, the carelessness of "techs". I read another member's experience finding all kinds of broken connectors and other defects after his cam phaser replacement. It's just too bad when major defects are found, these days the manufacturers just won't do a permanent fix. Even Toyota is resigned to just replacing their defective transmission parts with more defective transmission parts.

Yep. My biggest fear. I am also looking at the RR. But I look at this way. 3/36 warranty. And I believe my dealer offers lifetime powertrain warranty. And does every truck have the issue? NO. last poll I looked at the numbers were low. Fact remains I loved the truck when I test drove one. If I became serious, you bet I would have the dealer cold start it and tell me Well, did you hear it? If so find me another one.

I will be sure to ask my dealer if they'll give me a loaner or not.

Its different being a mechanic at a dealership cranking out work all day to the time and patience you have working on your own car/truck. I don't consider the carbon buildup a reliability problem though, its kind of regular maintenance, like changing belts, brake pads, etc.
