Need Help Choosing a Tonneau Cover

Hey guys, I've been going back and forth trying to decide on a tonneau cover for my 2024 Ranger with a 5ft bed.

Hard folding covers seem solid and secure, but I keep hearing about added weight and reduced bed access, especially if you frequently load and unload the bed. On the other hand, soft roll-ups look much easier for day-to-day use, whether it's for daily driving or weekend gear.

I've been checking out a few of the more talked-about options first, like Truxedo for soft roll-ups, Lomax for low-profile soft covers, and Leer for hard folding styles. I've also seen some budget-friendly choices mentioned, like Tyger and Garvee. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the options and not sure which one to pick.

Any tonneau covers you'd recommend? Thanks in advance.

Your post doesn’t include Bakflip mx4. Should at least check it out, watch some reviews while deciding. I think it’s the most popular option at this point

I’ve owned 3 of them and they have been excellent. To me, a hard cover is required. I spend quite a bit of time in cities while traveling with expensive gear in the bed, so something that provides a little security. It also folds up to give access to like 95% of the bed when needed. Also, with it raised there is (barely) enough room to fit a mountain bike over a tailgate cover. A lot of the tonneaus don’t give quite enough room

Get the Leer 650, quad fold, no tubes, no leaks, no hitting back window when open, had several this is the best in my opinion.

Have you considered a Softopper or similar? Able to utilize some vertical volume without needing to roll/fold something like a tonneau, but still the versatility to fold it to retain full truck bed capability. I haven't had mine long, but I'm pleased.

I bought the Rough Country soft roll-up off Amazon. I would rate it a solid 4/10 out of the box. Mainly because the fit is pretty bad. I had to order some foam to seal the front and rear gaps. Also, I suspect it would be pretty easy to jimmy, but considering you could cut a soft cover in seconds I'm not sure that matters so much. However, quality of the parts and vinyl are good.


Price was $170 and after the mods it fits fine so I'll probably keep it.

However, this interesting tonneau just hit the market at SEMA. It is a soft tonneau that converts to a softopper for added weather resistant storage.

If the word “budget” isn’t a prominent factor in your shopping, consider a fastop tonneau and soft top combo. It’s super easy to deploy or retract either and takes about 2 minutes to remove the soft top completely (with just 1 person) if you need the extra space. For versatile it’s tough to beat.

Budget and how you use your bed are the most important details. Also if you care about weather, security, looks, function, etc. more. They all have pros and cons, probably a few just bad value in each category but there's no universal perfect solution unfortunately.

I've had the Synetic USA AR Retractable PRO Tonneau Cover for $1,119.20 for a two months now. I'm very happy with it, the water proofing is great only a tiny bit of water can get in near the tailgate. Setting stuff on top of it while closed is surprisingly handy.

It does take up some bed space if that's a deal breaker for you. That is the downside to having retractable. I fit a washer and dryer in the Ranger without, now I could only fit one if I did it again.

I prefer the solid fold up type. More secure, quieter. Most of the soft covers I see don’t look in great shape, although those might be somewhat of a maintenance issue.

i think you are right to be conceened about the weight from the standpoint of on the truck and removing.

but some are lighter than others,

i have a Lomax hard cover. I’m not sure I can recommend it for the price, I think they cut some corners like not painting in inside of the panels but it does look nice from the outside.

it is about 44 lbs, and is possibly one of the easiest to remove and put back on because it doesn't use any screws to attach to the rail.

as far as access from the side, that’s plenty easy on a hard fold up

and if you want a load of sand or bark dust, I would rather remove the cover than roll or fold it up.

and very infrequently I haul something large and I want it right back against the bed, so again, I’d want the cover removed.

A big question. Do you want to spend $200 or $1200 on a tonneau, or $3000 on a shell?

The cheap Tyger brand is surprisingly nice for the money. If you decide you wanna upgrade later sell it for 100-125 locally. That’s what I did. Have a WildTop soft topper now
