I was wondering what everyone is using for the spare tire lock? Ford lock or any aftermarket ones? Just curious because I’m fixing to take a long road trip and wanted to see what everyone is using to protect your spare tire? I’d hate to be missing mine when I actually need it. Lol. I know the ford one just puts a small lock on the actual hole on the bumper. Does it really protect it or is it some cheap piece? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

There is a plate with a padlock to block the rod from entering the trunk hole.

I was actually thinking on making a plate that could be removed only by putting down the tailgate. Something bolted perhaps.

I have no idea if this works:
https://spareprotector.com/

At one time I thought about trying one, but I never did..,,,

Since then I have parked overnight in some pretty sketchy areas, but I never once worried about my spare tire vanishing, only the valuable stuff inside the truck and bed…. Of course I have a steelie that is less than $100 to replace, if you have a BL Capable wheel, that would be crazy expensive…… plus it would get trashed under there too.

Have you lowered the spare tire?

https://www.ranger6g.com/forum/threads/lowering-the-spare-tire.20242/

I think if you stuffed something into the funnel that funnels the end into the spool that would drive a thief crazy.

Or wrap a cable through a hole on the rim and through the part that hold the spare and lock it.

I can’t imagine a lock in the outside hole doing much but it would be better than nothing.

Although unless you know what you are doing it can be frustrating to lower the tire.

Where do people go that spares are stolen?

I must live a sheltered life.

That protector looks handy.

I’d like to see how they can cut the cable on a ranger.

They can have my steel rim spare. Although I did upgrade to matching OEM alloy rim and tire.

I haven’t lowered it yet. I will soon before my trip. The weekend before thanksgiving and that week we’ll be traveling from Houston to the Grand Canyon, Vegas and then Los Angeles and back home. We’ve done this trip in our Explorer before and I didn’t really worry about it. I seen some stuff on FB that people had their spare stolen from Vegas and LA. We’re not staying in any Shady parts on our trip. Since I’ll be far from home I’d hate to not have it in an emergency. But everything y’all have posted are really great ideas and products. Just wanted some opinions or experience on the locks cause I haven’t seen much products online. But I’ll definitely post what I go with before my trip.
I appreciate all the input.

Hmm, never considered someone stealing my spare. Especially when I saw it was a steel wheel with an off brand tire.
