I was looking at the tailgate of my '25 RR, and I wanted to see how much room was there with the panel removed. Picture is attached. I was thinking about 3 main options. 1. install a small lifepo4 battery back there. It would be strapped to the support brackets. Cords would run through the wire outlet and run up to the bed panel. That way I would have a power supply regardless of truck ignition. Looking at the space available a 12 volt 50 amp hour battery would more than likely be the only option, unless there is a very skinny 100ah bettery out there. You could attach two, one in each bay and run them in parallel or series, depending on needs. I was also looking at running the charging port wiring to the truck bed panel as well. 2. Similar to first, battery in one bay and bluetooth radio in second bay. Again, would have a bluetooth sound system with its own power supply. I already have the bluetooth radio. It's a pyle marine bluetooth system. Link is below. 3. Get the Ford bedliner for the tailgate only and cut into that to access the open bays. The tie rods to the locks would have to be repositioned to access the full space. That should be much of an issue. the bedliner for tailgate is, Liner Load Compartment - Ford (R1WZ-9900038-C). Hopefully, 3D printing some storage cubbies to insert into the cut outs. Although, I don't think many 3D printers have a print bed that large.

I also just really wanted the part that I unscrewed to be hinged. That way could access the unused bay so much easier. In my research I did run across this company. https://hfabusa.com/collections/ford/products/ford-ranger-tailgate-storage-usa-model-t9-2024-model. There product looks great, but I have to admit I don't know much about them.

Thoughts?

It would be VERY useful for ratchet straps, a recovery rope, tools or as a semi hidden compartment. Door should be quite strong and look black oem.. Anyway its a great place to store cargo stuff.

My Wildtrak is storing the ratchet straps under one of the seats at the rear. All other places like rear underseat is full with 3 things.

Not a bad idea.
Bear in mind the weight loading of the tailgate surface on occasion.
Realize that area gets wet.
But the biggie is a 100% reliable method of rearranging the latch rods.

I'm considering making my own insert for under the back seat. There's a lot of totally wasted space there.

I had the Hfab storage in my 2019. Very convenient but definitely added weight.

I've never thought of that. A small battery bank would be great to run a small 12V cooler when the engine is off. Have you looked at any of the new solid state batteries?

They are nice but super expensive. I was hoping to keep costs down. still looking into feasibility of 12v 50ah lifepo4 battery.

The Colorado and Canyon have tailgate storage. It was a good idea, but no matter what it is nearly impossible to keep 100% dry, so anything in there corrodes or gets funky unless you are religious about airing it out. I kept desiccant packs in mine and my ratchet straps still rusted. I had a cover on the bed.

that is sad to hear. Is it water leak or condensation? Honda ridgeline has trunk storage w/ rubber seal around the door and a channel for water. Seems like rubber seal around door edge would easily do it, but obviously harder than it looks!
