I might be in the minority but I like the look of the XLT headlights better. The projector "rectangles" just don't do it for me.
Yeah, Trucks are like women. Every guy has there tastes/ preferences.
One reason went lariat is I can’t stand looks of the xlt head lights.
it’s what makes the world go round

At least you have push button start. It still vexes me that a mid level trim doesn't have it.

XLT will save me 5-6k and still give me adaptive cruise and integrated trailer brake controller.
It's not like lariat has rear ac or AC seats. So fuck it.

I don't care about zone lighting, push button start, turn signal indicators in body color mirrors, Ford nav, and the audio isn't worth that. I also detest leather
Generally how I feel too. I got ACC, remote start, 360 camera, etc with the XLT. I actually like leather and would have liked to have that, but not for $5k. Other than leather the Lariat really had nothing else I cared much about. The XLTs are really nicely equipped these days.

Placing my order for a new 6G Ranger at the end of the month.

Just poured through this entire thread in an effort to help me decide whether or not the Lariat is worth the extra $5K. It was a tremendous help.

Thanks for the insight everyone.

Test drive as many different options you can get your hands on. It was how I decided. Everyone has different tastes.

Really? I test drove a 2.7L XLT (and some other brands) because I was more concerned about the engine differences. I wouldn’t have expected the Lariat to drive any different. I’ve been driving a 2006 Mustang GT for the past several years, so my “technology” and “comfort” expectations are pretty low.

There are a number of differences and while some can be had through options to the xlt, or added on your own using lariat parts (like the upper glove box), some cannot. I like heated steering wheels. I really like the headlights in the lariat over the xl and xlt (not just the aesthetics, but how well they work at night). Since I have younger drivers in the house I would have optioned the tech and safety features on the xlt so it made sense for me to just get the lariat. I also tend to keep vehicles for 10-20 years so the price will be long forgotten when I’m ready to move on, but if I regret not getting something as an option I’ll remember that h til the day I sell it. An example of that is one of my Mercedes: I bought an e-class new in 2006 but didn’t get the split rear seat; to this day I’m mad at myself for not getting that, but I never think about the $60k I spent on the rest of the car

My reason is the zone heating and heated steering wheel. I know it's a large price point to swallow, but over the course of 10+ years, it's not really an issue for me.

Best of luck with your choice!

Ok just trying to help. For me the off road packages drove totally different then the regular tires. Much quieter and smoother ride . Enjoy what ever you get.

Sounds like I’ve got some more test drives to take. Thank you all for the great advice.

IMHO the XLT is better because:

1. Way cheaper
2. Better looking wheels
3. Cloth interior
4. Keyed ignition (yes I prefer keys over push button starts)
5. Single zone climate (I never understood dual climate when air is circulating everywhere...)
6. Slightly smaller infotainment
7. Less integrated technology

That's everything I can think of just off the top of my head. What can I say? I'm a basic bish.

The way I looked at it, other than the Lariat had the creature comforts that I personally wanted.... If you factor approximately$5K difference in the Lariat vs XLT w/301a, think about how long you intend to own the truck. If you're looking at 5 years, that's ~$83 a month (no interest) to have what you want vs what you can do without, depending on how you look at it. Depending on one's frugality, $83 a month extra can be justified, or can it? For some, better vision at night on the road, better wear resistance of the seating, ease of cleaning seating, more perimeter lighting, slightly better sound system, dual climate...can be justifications for various reasons. If you saw that deer a little better and could have avoided hitting it...too many things for one to consider for another person. There's the other side of the coin where some things in the Lariat may be cons to some.

This is something most people can talk about until they're blue in the face, because it's opinions. At the end of the day, you have to boil it down to your personal priorities and requirements.

TEST DRIVE

Just my couple of pennies.

I think many of us struggle with what we want vs what we need. Of course I really like all of the features but do I need them? Also sometimes you don't miss what you don't have. I can't blame anyone for their picks, its very much a personal choice and honestly both trims XLT and Lariat are very good.

Thats why i got an xl with an appearance package. Has all the stuff i actually use.

I had a 2017 texas titan 4x4, which is a bunch of packages loaded on a nissan titan sv, basically making it a platinum with cloth seats and no sunroof. I used the tow package, radio, ac, sprayed in bed liner, and cruise control. Three times i used the seat heaters.

All the other junk just took up space and made the owner's manual a required book to figure stuff out while driving. The wife would look up stuff and we would try it, then never use it again. Back up sensors, front sensors, blind spot sensors, stupid sensors! I had to turn off back up sensors to hook my rv up. What kind of dumb crap is that.

And 400hp/409tq v8 with 7 speed. 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds dead stock. Never used 4x4, towed probablt 8 times in the 4 years i had it, and the rest of the time was just not great gas mileage and super comfortable truck

So i said my next truck was going to be a midsize that gets good gas mileage and only has what i actually use.

I 100% got what i wanted in my xl stx 2wd. I enjoy this truck so much.

I wanted the Lariat, but the local dealer had the XLT in the color I wanted with a good mix of options, so I went and test drove it. It had way more stuff on it than I was expecting. I hadn't done 100% research on the differences between the two, but I wasn't expecting the big screen, heated seats, dual zone climate control, and the power sliding window.

So, back of the napkin math told me that the $5k+ price difference meant leather and a push button start, neither of which are that important to me. Super happy with the XLT.
