Hello 👋 everyone hope all is well!! I have another question for you all, I have a 2024 ford ranger xl 2.3l 4wd supercrew and curious about if you fill the gastank to the VERY TOP ,how many gallons would that tank hold ,I know the manual says 18.8 gallons, however if I fill my tank slowly continue to pump gas in that tank it would go to 22 to 24 gallons, my phone read 48% fuel level and my pickup held 12.8 gallons before you could see gas at the top ,just wondering if anyone would know the total amount of gallons capacity to the very top !!

That is a terrible idea. There is air gap in there for a reason. If it was diesel, not so bad. But gasoline needs expansion space. Hell, the aftermarket extended tanks void your warranty if you "top off".

So the answer is... as much as the pump will fill before it clicks off.

Yes, these days, stopping filling at the first click off of the pump is important.

On many vehicles, overfilling can cause check engine lights, and in some cases, it can ruin a canister that’s part of the emissions system which requires a fairly expensive repair.

Hell, even leaving the gas cap loose on newer vehicles usually results in a check engine light. On some vehicles, they were smart enough to update the software so it tells you to tighten the gas cap instead of giving you some vague and useless check engine light.

You should never overfill your gas tank after the pump automatically clicks off because modern fuel systems are designed with an evaporative emissions system that needs empty space in the tank for fuel vapors to expand and be properly managed. Continuously topping off the tank can force liquid gasoline into components such as the charcoal canister, potentially damaging expensive emissions equipment and triggering a check engine light. In hot weather, gasoline naturally expands, so a completely full tank may overflow even after you leave the pump. Stopping when the nozzle clicks off is the best practice.

I was taught two clicks and no more for all the reasons you mentioned.

I know this is just anecdotal, and my experience only, so take it with a grain of salt.
I fill mine as high as it goes before making a puddle on the ground that upsets the costco gas bar jockeys. They hate having to get to work with some absorball. But what else do they really do?
I drive immediately after filling and burn through a 1/4 tank before its parked I've never had an issue on any vehicle i drive. I honestly never look to see how much it took
Im sure if I did this, went around the block and parked in my driveway, there would be issues.

I've filled to the very top maybe a dozen times in 2 years 12k miles ,all but I think twice that I filled up that I let the pickup set for a while , the other times I was on the road for a 300 miles trip and burned the extra couple of Gallons the top of the gastank in a short bit, however, I'm stopping at the first click of the nozzle! When filling up!

Old money bags here can afford to waste gas at $4 gallon.

But anyway, why bother with absorball. It will evaporate before the attendants get there.
