The actual cause was not determined but he did suspect detonation under load. Wondering if this could be from running RUG, but I was under the impression the ECM, using data from the knock sensors would automatically compensate for low octane to protect the engine. Still, with a compression ratio of 10.3:1 I wonder if it can really compensate enough.

Interesting but not a worry. At my current average, it would take me 20 years to hit 100,000 miles!

If it makes you feel any better, I regularly worry about my open deck 2.3 in my 24 stx and yearn for a more robustly engineered 2.7, and yet anyone on here would tell me the same.

Don't worry about it. Change the oil every 5,000 miles or less, use the best 5W-30 you can buy. This is one of our best engines.

There was an issue with sodium filled exhaust valves for that year. Ford has addressed. Unfortunately, it was the issue for this engine. After years, engines have no issues with the exhaust valves. Does not mean something else may sneak in but not worried about the welds on the liquid sodium filled exhaust valves on my 2.7.

So basically it shouldn't affect any Ranger 2.7L owners since the production started with model year 2024. Not saying there couldn't be other issues in the future but Ford addressed the issue and fixed it.
