Took my 2024 Ranger to the dealership for its first oil change and was very surprised to find out that, according to the dealership, Ford uses a synthetic blend and not a full synthetic oil.
Has anyone else encountered this?

I normally do my own oil changes but since it’s a brand new truck I did not want to take a chance on potentially
messing up the warranty if it develops some type of engine problem.

Yeah, on my '21 and '24. Most places will let you specify full synth, for additional fee of course. I don't, as I'm fine with the blend every 5K miles.

YMMV. I've gotten/heard diff things from diff service advisors, etc.
From what I can see, 2.3L owners manual recommends either one (SP = blend, FS = full synth). "Motorcraft® SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-Q1SP, XO-5W30-Q1FS".

So i guess we can ask for specific style or the dealer or tech will do what they normally do.

Edit: I have no idea how it comes from factory. Or what happens if randomly switch back and forth over the years since we may not know what dealer does by default.

i got my first 5 oil changes for free and haven't used them all yet but every time i have gone in, i specify i want full synthetic and i just pay the difference in the oil cost (usually about 30 bucks if i remember correctly). If you change every 5k miles, you should be fine with synthetic blend but i'm a huge fan of preventative maintenance so i go with full synthetic and still change every 5K. I dont want to deal with oil fuel dilution and the issues that can cause in the long run

I go full synth only on all my cars, have done so for coming on 20 years now. It's anecdotal only, but with full synth if have never had engine issues, engine wear issues, oil burning issues etc....including in a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country which has the 3.8 liter V6...that Chrysler engine famous for sludge and oil burning issues. The van, as of yesterday, has 283k miles on it and still runs clean. I think full synth has everything to do with the lack of issues.

My service manager recommends Fords synthetic blend, so that's what I have used for years on several new Fords, every 5k miles with no issues. My BIG question has still always been, what is the blend ratio? It could be 99% regular and 1% synthetic and be called synthetic blend. Google doesn't even know. Now that is TOP SECERET information. Does anybody in Ranger Land know?

Motorcraft oil is a synthetic blend unless you request full synthetic which will cost you more. I do my own oil changes and only use Amsoil Signature full synthetic 5W-30 on both my 3.5L ecoboost and our 2.7L ecoboost in the new Ranger. My 3.5L in my 2015 F150 has 138,000 trouble free miles.

The service manager at the dealership I use here in Watertown, SD told me I should use full synthetic due to the 2.3L having a turbo charger.
Since I have the Premium Care service & maintenance I figured why not use full synthetic.

I purchased a used 2024 Ford Ranger XLT in April 2025. It has the 2.3 engine and it had 11,000 miles on it at the time of purchase. The oil had been changed at a local Ford dealer in January, at 10,000 miles, using Motorcraft 5w30 semi-synthetic oil. I did an oil change in May and sent the sample to Blackstone for an analysis. Oil use interval was 2,145 miles. The report I received was a good one, wear metals very low, no contamination in the oil, etc. In fact, Blackstone said this in their comments: "If this Ford looks as good on the outside as it does on the inside, you picked out a beauty!" This made me feel pretty good about the purchase..... time will tell. What surprised me about this analysis was that even though it was a relatively short interval, the oil viscosity was low/thin.
SUS Viscosity @210F - 53.7 Values should be 56-63
cSt Viscosity@ 100C - 8.39 Values should be 9.1-11.3
Since I will be towing a small travel trailer with my Ranger I will probably start using full synthetic.

Just did our 2nd oil change at 2,656 miles. The first change was at 157 miles. The 2.7L still purrs like a kitten. Very happy with it so far.
