Tried using the power plug first time today. Plugged a circular saw in. Would run a second or so and stop. Pulled trigger same thing. Ran then stopped. Plugged in a small fan. No issues? You would think you could run a power tool off the bed outlet? WTF???

I think I read once that it's only good for up to 400 watts.

From the owners manual:

Power Outlet Limitations

Do not use the power outlet for these types of devices:
  • Cathode ray tube type televisions.
  • Motor loads, for example vacuum cleaners, electric saws and other electric power tools, or compressor-driven refrigerators.
  • Measuring devices which process precise data, for example medical equipment or measuring equipment.
  • Other appliances requiring an extremely stable power supply, for example microcomputer-controlled electric blankets or touch sensor lamps.

Most things with electric motors tend to draw a large current during startup. Sometimes up to 10x larger than normal operating load. Circular saws require over 400 watts, and startup is probably a couple thousand watts.

400 watts isn't a lot of power. It's equivalent to a few bright incandescent lightbulbs (say, 4 x 100W each).

Wow. No power tools lol. You'd think with a ruler on the tailgate and a power plug that would be the number one usage lolol. Oh well. At least I can stop figuring that one out lol thanks

Thanks. Yes makes sense when you put it that way. Just disappointed it can't run basic power tools but never gave it much thought. Figured plug, great! Lol. So I can plug a night light in it lol.

Only the F150 Lightning has enough power to run power tools. Not 100% sure but I think it 2.9 Kilowatts.

Not just the lightning. There are several levels of power available from the regular F150, ranging from 2kW to 7kW

You could wire an aftermarket inverter behind the rear seat and send a higher-wattage plug to the back.

What baffles me is why manufacturers don't just use larger inverters.

This vehicle is perfectly capable of higher output.

Its a sales gimmick.....I dont have that on mine. I bought an XL base model and it does not have the electrical package with the in -bed lighting and power plugs etc. I'm quite fine with my choice especially seeing as it would have zero use to me ............and to the OP as well

Well it does have value. Better than a black blank. I wish they would have kept the 12v they dumped for 25 but it does have value. Can still use even limited.

First time? :p Literally every truck I've owned that had a power outlet in the bed was a ~400 watt limit and I've owned quite a few of them. It's because that is the typical safe/reliable limit for a stock car battery. You COULD go to 1000-1500 watts with your own inverter but that much strain is going to make your average car battery much less reliable and it wouldn't be able to sustain it for all that long. You'd have to get a hybrid/electric or a heavy duty truck with options to have a big enough inverter to run a saw out of the box.

Not accurate. Over 2k is only on Hybrid F-150s and the 2K plugs aren't available until you get to the Tremor/Platinum models and you sacrifice all of the under seat storage in the rear for it because they put the batteries and inverter there.

I'm surprised they ditched the 12V first instead of AC power.

Makes perfect sense. Thanks
