Hi Everyone,

I have had my XLT FX4 2.3L since May of 2024. I currently have about 1900 miles on it (work from home so don't drive it much).

About a month ago as the weather started getting colder here in CO. I started noticing hard downshifts (I think it's between second and first gear) when coming to a stop. This only seems to happen a single time when the truck is first started up after sitting and gets cold. I have only noticed it in the cold, it never happened over the summer.

Yesterday was the harshest downshift yet... I was approaching a stop sign and was slowing down and the truck downshifted so hard that it actually felt like someone rearended us at low speed. It was actually jarring inside the cabin. I was the only one on the road, so I wasn't rear-ended ;).

Has anyone experienced this and know what it might be? I am considering taking it into the dealer, but I'm afraid I will just get the runaround with the typical... "Could not reproduce" response, I'm sure.

Hi there! I can look into your Ranger's shifting concern on my end. To get started, could you please send a private message over with the name/location of your local Ford dealer and your Ranger's VIN?

Robo, please let me know what you find out. I have had some hard shifts from time to time; very intermittent. Thx

I to just had this happen this Tuesday. We were slowing to stop also. First time happening and just over 8K miles. My wife and I both thought someone rear ended us also because of how hard it was. Nothing since then. If it does happen again I will take it in. As stated by others please let us know what you find out if you take it in.

Anyone have an update on this? Mine has been doing it this December in SC which luckily doesn't get too cold.

Same, any update? I'm also in Colorado and I'll get one harsh downshift on a cold start. Like the first time I come to a stop after starting a drive on a cold morning, after that it's all smooth

I'm also in CO and I've got the same truck and the same problem. For me it started pretty soon after buying it in April. I get hard shifts on acceleration or deceleration, generally only between the lowest 2 or 3 gears. It is definitely worse in the cold. I plan to take it in soon.

I made an appointment for the dealership to look at it, but the earliest I could get was Jan 27. We'll see. I know at least one person on this forum already had their transmission replaced.

Be sure to let us know what you find out. I have not taken mine in yet. I live 40 minutes from the dealership so it's a pain to go all the way down there.

I still have the harsh downshifts, but nothing as harsh as the one that prompted me to post this thread.

And I agree with some others here, after paying a little closer attention, it does seem to occur mostly when downshifting between 3rd to 2nd.

I had a similar 3rd to 2nd hard shift in my RR. For me it seems to be software-based concern as when the FP Tune was installed, the hard shift moved to the 7th to 6th downshift.

Just noticed this for the first time with my XLT. Came to a stop and felt a hard downshift in sport mode. Pretty sure the rear wheels locked up. I think it happened 3rd to 2nd. Only 600 miles on it so far. Currently 48 degrees F.

My 2024 ranger 2.3 4x4 with 6500 miles has this clunk often when i come to a stop. Hot or cold makes no differance. Its like the transmission dont shift down until i stop. Also twice i went to take off and there was no forward power. The transmisson was stuck in high gear and then clunked hard and shifted down and took off. One of those times was pulling into traffic and gave me a good scare. Lucky for me all surrounding cars had working brakes, (and horns).
