I changed my break in oil at 1,200 miles with Pennzoil full synthetic, I am now at 2,800 miles, about 1/2 of that is highway. Yet my oil life on the Ford app says 46% with about 1,600 miles remaining. Is it because of all the city driving? I have only been off road for about 15 miles and I have not driven it hard by any means.

Obviously I was supposed to reset something when I changed the break in oil but I just now noticed the oil life on the app. But even if I had reset it at 1,200 miles it's still indicating an oil change at 4,388 miles. My plan was every 5,000. 2025 XLT 2.7

These just use an algorithm based on use correct? As opposed to an actual oil quality sensor?

Correct, takes into account everything engine related, engine starts, miles, temperature, idle time, etc, and calculates it.

As Shrek said, it's an algorithm based on driving and conditions.
Don't use that as a reason to change oil. Do it every 5K, regardless of what the oil life meter says, else it will have you changing oil at 10K intervals.

Resetting the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor

Only reset the oil life monitoring system after changing the engine oil and oil filter.
  1. Press the menu button on the steering wheel to enter the instrument cluster display main menu.
  1. Select Vehicle Maintenance.
  1. Select Oil Life.
  1. Press and hold the OK button until the system reset conformation appears.

on the gladiator I had, I’d change it at 50% every time, that got me around 4500-5500 miles per change which is what I wanted. I’ll be sticking to the same on Ranger as well, so long as the interval is ~ the same for 50% = 4500-5500 miles.

Definitely this. Also, if you’re someone like me who doesn’t put a lot of miles on your truck each year, you should still change your oil every six months or so, even if you haven’t reached 5,000 miles.

Motor oil additives break down over time when not in a sealed container, so to maintain maximum protection, you should avoid exceeding either 5,000 miles or six months between oil changes.

I always use mileage. I always go every 3000 miles. I've seen the oil life on the app a few times and It's always in the mid 40%s left, but I change it.

To flush out wear particles that are created during the first several hundred miles of break in.

With new engines on our Grand Nationals, we would run straight 30 weight for start up (~10-15 minutes), dump it, then fill with 15 or 20w-50 synthetic. That is then changed at ~1000.

My Wife's Bronco Sport 2.0L doesn't get driven a whole lot, about 3000 miles a year on average. Because of this I have the oil changed annually with full synthetic oil. The additives in the oil don't necessarily break down but oil that doesn't get up to full operating temperature (from short trips, etc.) tends to become "acidity," and this is an engine killer. As a Jet Engine Mechanic, we never changed our full synthetic oil while the engine was on the wing but, we did regular oil analysis and paid strict attention to oil acidity for this reason.
On my RR I change the oil every 5000 miles using only full synthetic oil...

Isn't the concept of "break in oil" kind of old school from when vehicle engines had looser tolerances and it was required?

Dealership told me it wasn't necessary to do that in a 2025 Ranger. I don't plan on changing mine until I hit at least 3,000 miles.

I change my oil at 5K intervals as well. 60/40% highway vice city miles. Some off road and hauling camping gear. The 10K interval scares the you know what out of me.

I just do mine once a year as I only put on around 5500 miles.

I like your idea of changing at 50%. Most recently I changed at 5K and the monitor said 28% life left. Most of my driving is either short trips in the city or hard trips in the mountains. Not a lot of light duty cruising.
