I have less than 500 mile on my New Truck and it skip shift from 1st to third and does it more when cold. I drive it easy when it happens but under heavier acceleration, it doesn’t do it that I’ve noticed. I’ve read a lot on here and online get some trans being replaced and some owners being told it’s normal. I’ve read the truck needs to learn your driving habits and it will correct its self. Wish I knew the truth , but I’m worried I’ve invested in a Ford truck for the first time and it’s has transmission issues.

Mine does the same thing - goes from 1st to 3rd when it is cold.
Once it warms up it uses all of the gears.

I'm guessing that is just the way it is programmed to shift when it is cold.
Why? I don't understand - it makes no sense to me.
But my Tranny shifts like a dream once it is warmed up, so I'm not complaining.

Oh, and nice lookin' Truck !

I don't have a Ranger yet so I don't speak from driving the 10R60 in the 6G from experience, other than test driving. I've done a fair amount of research regarding the transmissions, however.

It's hard to say exactly why, but it's common for the 10R80 and 10R60 to skip gears in the normal driving shift strategy. The TCM/PCM are programmed to take variables into account. In normal driving, optimized fuel economy is largely the goal. It's not surprising that 2nd and 3rd gear ratios are pretty close as are 4th and 5th (4th is reportedly skipped sometimes). Temperature can be a factor as components are tighter when cold and expand when warmed up. Throw in throttle position.... A lot to account for.

Additionally, you should notice the shift strategy change if you put it in Sport and so on. Sport would likely not skip a gear because acceleration is largely the goal.

To compare logic, it's not uncommon for truck drivers with 13-speed, 18-speed, etc., to skip gears when driving, especially under light load.

However, if you experience hard shifts, that may be cause for concern and have the dealer take a look.

10R60 Ratios
1 4.71:1
2 2.99:1
3 2.14:1
4 1.76:1
5 1.52:1
6 1.27:1
7 1:1
8 0.85:1
9 0.68:1
10 0.63:1
R 4.88:1

its designed that way to be fuel savings and will skip other gears if not needed. use sport mode or tow mode and it will not skip gears , but you lose on the fuel saving feature if youre not really driving hard and the torquey motors do well with the close gearing .

For what little it's worth, I haven't heard of folks in the 6th gen rangers with 10r60 transmissions having issues. The 5th gen rangers with the 10r80 had major problems with the shift drums and lots of owners had to have them replaced.

Indeed, Ford now uses an anodized finished outer shell in the transmission for better substrate surface. Also, modified a C/D/F clutch pack bushing that didn't have a machined lip causing it to be able to walk and damage seals.

By 'cold', do you mean the air temp or when the truck hasn't been driven in a few hours?

Yes at first start up and truck is still cold. After 10/15 minutes driving it shifts fine 95% of the time

I've experienced a hard shift at cold temps while downshifting to a stop. Happened in my Bronco and noticed in my new Ranger. Both 2.7l mated to the 10speed.

I have a 2018 mustang GT with the 10R80 trans, and it almost always skips 2nd and 4th gears. Occasional hard downshits around 4 to 3 when cold. Otherwise very smooth.
What is the difference between the 10R60 and 10R80?

Mine has done this since new, hot or cold. I've seen it in 2nd gear like 3 times over the 8 months I've driven it.

They are virtually identical, differing only in the amount of torque they can handle.
The 10R60 can handle slightly less torque than the 10R80.

I'm going to catch a lot of flak for this on here, but I'm convinced it's the poor quality fluids. Change them all out in your diffs, transfer case and transmission with a good brand name.
My 5G Ranger had horrible gear hunting/hesitation/lurching etc. I started with the simplest things first, and it cured the problem.
