Im thinking about an S&B but was wondering how many of you have dealt with engine codes following install. If I do, an intercooler is preferable as well? I’ve searched the forums but haven’t found any definitive answer on the engine code issue. Please share what other mods I should be looking at with an S&B CAI to complement the build. Also, I don’t like the sound of the blow off valves…is there any other options that are easier on the ears but still protect the turbo’s?
thank you!

I have the S&B CAI and a Wagner intercooler. I paired them with the factory performance tune. I’ve never had an engine code and the truck runs great. I have the stock by pass valve and you don’t hear it much.

You can feel the better throttle response with the mods.

Why are you installing it? More noise, that’s about all you get, oh less filtration too.

I just installed the Process West CAI w/ pipes and their Stage 2 intercooler/pipes. Zero CELs from the parts themselves. the only one you’ll get is the one you create when you snap a connector because you’re rushing to hear turbo noises. Don’t ask me how I know 😂

If you manage not to do that, you’re smooth sailing… no begging the dealer for a new connector, and no extra therapy sessions pulling all the couplers and piping back out to fix your mistake.

I did the CVF stage 1 intercooler & charge pipe kit - no codes. Kept my air box stock & just went with a K&N filter in the stock box so I can’t speak to that.

On the BOV - I went with the Turbosmart dual port which allows you to rotate/aim the vent to atmosphere port. I aimed it down & towards the front and I NEVER hear it in the cab. Seriously…NEVER. Granted I also have a complete Borla exhaust system which runs on the raucous side and I always have the stereo on, but I never hear the whoosh of the BOV. I had to verify it was evening working by opening the windows & popping the hood in the driveway…….it’s definitely working alright. Luckily it’s there and stouter than the stock unit.

just some food for thought….

how much noise increase is there with the CAI on these? i had one on one of my last pickups and it was so loud i went back home, after the test drive, and tore it back off. A little noise is fine. i don't mind some turbo whistle but if it makes a ton of noise, no thanks

I have the S&B and with the side cover on it really doesn't make much more noise. Goosetuned tested it on the dyno and it gained 15 hp, there is a thread on here. No CELs unless you forget to plug in a sensor like I did. I had a BMC drop-in before that. Porsche uses them on their high-end GT cars so I guess filtration must be alright contrary to the "experts" on here. Ford uses high-flow filters on the Shelby models too. The filtration argument is very tiring.

With the side panel off, I can hear the intake if I really pay attention and don't have the radio on. It's quiet. You won't experience any whooshing or turbo blow off noises from the S&B. I have their dry filter, not the oiled filter.

So why do you like it? I’m just not sold yet…

I didn’t buy it for noise. I bought knowing I would tune the truck once the accessport was out and the tuners have indicated there are gains from a cai.

Ur talking about goostune? How does that work with warranty…I’m assuming it voids it.

A tune by anyone doesn’t void a warranty. If there is a warranty issue it is the dealers responsibility to prove the tune was the cause. I had a 19 Ranger, tuned aftermarket for 100k miles transmission went. Took it in to the dealer. Total rebuild was covered except my $200 deductible.

Both Goose and 5-star have proven that the S&B is worth about 15 hp. I run mine with both covers on, the side cover off had the sound echoing off the inner fender. SVTperformance in their YT video on the Bronco Raptor and S&B/5-star tune said that at any real speed the covers would have no negative impact, even on the dyno the difference was negligible.
