Here is the excel data for the torque curve graphed from my 2016 GT PP with Stage 2 Power Pack rated for 455 HP at the crank:

3.73 Torsen diff.

Ford Ranger Would you trade your current Ranger Raptor for a 5.0 Coyote version? 1784569481308-cx

Here's the RWHP numbers from a forum member here on Ranger6g who had just the Pro Cal done (he had 1,248 miles on it since the cal, so it was fully adapted):

Ford Ranger Would you trade your current Ranger Raptor for a 5.0 Coyote version? 1784569751421-y

NOW, consider your talking manual transmission RWD vs. a torque converter automatic straight axle truck, the RR has more along the lines of 14~15% drivetrain loss vs. the GT's 10~12%. So the GT will be even lower since we are interested in engine vs. engine, not the whole system including drivetrain losses (i.e., a 5.0L in a RR would have the same higher drivetrain losses if you put it in a Raptor).

3,500 RPM:
3.0L @ ~470 lb-ft torque
5.0 @ 379 lb-ft torque (drop another couple percent for drivetrain loss differences!)

4,500 RPM:
3.0L @ ~425 lb-ft torque
5.0 @ 389 lb-ft torque (drop another couple percent for drivetrain loss differences!)

5,500 RPM:
3.0L @ ~370 lb-ft torque
5.0 @ 371 lb-ft torque (drop another couple percent for drivetrain loss differences!)

Now my 5.0 would keep going all the way up to 7,100 RPM, peak power didn't come in til' about 6,300 RPM on the 5.0 with Stage 2 Power Pack. Peak power on the 3.0L comes in much lower around 5,400 RPM.

Both my Gen 2 5.0L Coyote with Stage 2 Power Pack and the 3.0L with Pro Cal are rated for 455 HP at the crank, but the 5.0 needs to really rev out to get into the power AND in the mid-range it's a lot weaker than the 3.0L.

You way down on torque at 3k to 4k RPM with the 5.0L compared to the 3.0L TT. The close ratioed 10-speed pairs very well with the 3.0 TT since it doesn't have as long of arms as the 5.0, which revs and revs and revs out (stage 3 power pack gets you to 7,500 RPM, but you lose some mid-range for more top-end).

Both are good engines, but the 3.0L is probably better suited to truck applications with its meaty mid-range torque especially for towing. And it doesn't need the long legs that my 5.0L did since that had a 6-speed and the trucks 10-speed as 7 close ratioed forward gears, so you only dropping ~1,000 to 1,200 RPM between gears, it's just always in the power band, although the 5.0 would be to, but it would need to run at much higher RPM when towing to get similar torque to the 3.0L.

I think with just the Pro Cal and an intercooler upgrade, the 3.0L offers a bit more juice. The 5.0L's also are de-tuned to 400 HP for truck duty, so they may have issues with knock when subjected to towing applications etc. Even the 5.2L Predator in the F-150 Raptor R makes 40 HP less in the F-150 application than in the GT500.

So I think the 5.0L in a RR would actually be going backwards in performance, BUT it would sound nice! I loved the sound of my 5.0L with Corsa exhaust.

BTW yes ONLY if the 5.0L was supercharged, for NA 5.0L I'll stick with the 3.0L TT.

I would love to hear what the Vibrant 1141's sound like. Seems like a good way to go $$$
I'll see if I can post it on YouTube, but its been forever since I have added anything there.

I would rather have the 7.3 Godzilla given the choice. It's smaller external dimensions make it a better fit. Also big cube 90 degree 2 valve pushrod motors sound the best.
The 5.0 requires careful selection of exhaust components to make it sound good.
It's impossible to make the 3.0/2.7 sound good.

I voted no.

The 2.7L/3.0L EB family are great motors. A Bronco just hit 250k miles the other day with the 2.7L (tangent: and then promptly broke at 255k due to oil pump belt, lol, but I would consider that a huge win regardless; the consensus over at the Bronco forums IIRC would be to replace it around 150k miles), and plenty of examples out there of 300k+ on trucks.

Anyways, it's a midsize truck, I'm not exactly dying for a big V8 soundtrack. I might get a Power Wagon in the future, but I wouldn't be buying it for the engine soundtrack or power...the EcoBoosts and Hurricanes are too good at what they do.

It would need more than 480hp/415lb-ft for me to trade. With the FP tune, our trucks are pushing 455hp/530lb-ft of torque. The rumble of a V8 would be nice, but it would have to be a heck of a build for me to trade.
Goodness a lot more because it would be seriously pricey

We could probably make a direct connection between this subject and the decision of Dodge to bring the 5.7 Hemi to the RAM 1500 in 2026. I know the RAM 1500 is a bigger truck, but the data is interesting.

After test driving the V8 5.7 Rebel, the director of sales at a big dealership near montreal told me that since they brought back the 5.7 Hemi, they are mostly selling 50-50 of Hurricane 3.0L vs 5.7 Hemi. The interesting fact is that on paper, the 3.0l is more powerfull and more fuel efficient (while not towing). So even there, they are selling 50% of Hemi on all these sales.

He also said that many of these buyers told him they would NOT have bought the truck with the 3.0l, meaning they raised the number of sales by offering the option.

There are still a LOT of men outthere, that will go for a truck with natural aspirated V8 over a smaller turbo boosted engine, even though they are not as efficient on paper.

I just bought a Raptor 2026 in marsh grey (delivery is today ... CANT wait). But I would have taken the V8 FOR SURE if I had the option, even though the performance numbers would have been similar.

Oh hell yes. I I don't need need any more power than my 2.7, but I used to have a GT with the Coyote, and the sound alone would be worth it.

As much as I love a healthy sounding V8, I think the Coyote's power band is a poor choice, specifically for the Ranger Raptor, at least when it comes to off-roading and towing. In a Ranger sport truck meant to stay on the road, sure, but not the Raptor. They could do it though, the Coyote would need some revisions and fuel efficiency would go out the window, if you care about that.

I wouldn't go for a Coyote, which I thought I would previously, but I would for the Godzilla. Big HP and torque without a supercharger or turbo. LOVE the V8 rumble and it's about the only thing (other than ventilated seats) that I really, REALLY wish the Ranger Raptor had. I have often chosen better sound over increases in hp and/or torque as I don't compete and I don't drag race in my vehicles on the road. But c'mon, nice torquey motor and V8 soundtrack? Yes please!

Personally, I don't care what a 3.0L turbo 6 or any v6 can do or be boosted or modified to do.

What I do care about is that no v6 can ever do this.

Which this is really all that matters to me and why I desire a V8 so much.

It could be a second slower and get worse MPG which all be it the worse MPG is very doubtful.
But even if it did it would still be worth it for this simple fact
that only a V8 can do this. lol :p 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁 😁

I agree 100% with you, but I am thinking if Ford was to ever actually give us a V8 in a Ranger from the factory, it most likely would be a version of the Coyote and not the Godzilla. Now if it were ever to become possible to call up a company like AMW and pick a motor to drop in the Ranger, I am 100% going with the pushrod Godzilla over the overhead cam 5.0L Coyote.

But I would take about any v8 Ford wants to put in the thing, as long as I can slap on a Corsa muffler and get it to sound like this, I would simply be on cloud 9.

Nope. Coming from experience with F150s, I would pick the Ecoboost (3.5L) option every time for more torque lower in the RPM range and performance at altitude.
