I’m a newish owner and first time posting. I just installed a cool system to assist with hands-free driving. This is an open source system that has been discussed briefly on the forums in the past but the tech has progressed a little.

https://comma.ai/

The install was more involved than expected but was also easier than I thought it would be.

I used the Q4 wire harness from Comma.ai and Sunnypilot’s “staged” software and so far it’s been great.

There is a video on YouTube showing accessing the brain box behind the speedometer that is just a slight bit different than my truck but the concept was the same.

I am happy with the device and it safely takes over driving on the highway and in traffic. It has limitations but they are very easy to accommodate.

I encourage you to look in to this if you’re interested and rack up lots of highway miles.

One might at least spell colossal correctly before insulting another's intelligence.
Heehee. Point taken.
Wasn't trying to insult anyone's intelligence, more their judgment...
But, newbie's 1st post and it's essentially an advert for a sketchy product that's unlikely to fit the general forum audience in the first place - kind of set me off....

As a new enthusiast of my Ranger Raptor, I am available to answer technical questions in the Tech thread related to the install and function of this setup if anyone is interested.
Either way, enjoy your truck.

hmm, it says must have adaptive cruise control and lane centering. isn't self-driving what those two combined do together?

i don't have adaptive cruise but my lane centering drives itself very well so i don't know what else this system would do

There are differences between ford’s more sophisticated blue cruise on higher end trucks and what we have with lanekeep and adaptive cruise control; it sounds to me like this product makes up the difference .

Spelling aside, maybe the same people who made ford’s blue cruise and other likeminded folks. Most of the tech is already in our trucks.

i bet if every vehicle on the road was self driving, this stuff would be a lot less scary. and we will be accustomed to it than. right now, its hard to get used to. i remember buying the wife a titanium escape and it had self parking. it was a novelty to us and we showed it off to all our friends but we never actually used it in normal driving use. we should have because it parked perfectly every time, whether parallel parking or normal lot parking.

old habits are hard to change

To be fair Openpilot is essentially free. You can buy the hardware from a different company and load the software.

I run Openpilot on my truck too. It's neat if used responsibly someone can get comfy and watch the world go buy without having to babysit the steering, gas, or brakes for the most part.

With OP you don't need to touch the wheel, and it works from 0mph, and it can do lane changes automatically.

Some versions also recognize stop signs and stop lights but those features are less reliable.

I agree we should be nice. But when someone creates an account and then uses it to promote open source self-driving software… well, I’m extremely skeptical.
