I had to start somewhere and finally found a way I thought I could contribute after learning a lot from these forums over the last two months.

I apologize for the tone of my earlier comment. Every new member should be welcomed.

I'm not usually an asshat. (my wife disagrees...)

so you have to buy that 1k camera deal and then load some software? i can already tell its not going to work well for me. once you have to load software, my stuff breaks.

i was very happy when you could buy a cruise control add-on kit at the local auto parts store. back when cruise wasn't on the base model, or even mid trim levels. and it was just a magnet on the driveshaft with a sensor and then the carb arm was hooked to a little deal by a chain. we put those on tons of people's cars and trucks when i was 18-20.

now, i worry about loading stuff and locking up an ecu or some module where i could just mis-type a period or dash. the benefits of technology are awesome for those people who are good on computers.

What sort of collosal idiot would think this is a good idea?!!!

Sorry. We are not alike.
I've been driven more than 150K miles on Comma devices starting with a Comma 2 and they're fantastic. I don't drive my RR enough to warrant the install, but Comma makes any trip much more enjoyable and relaxing.

We get it if the luddites don't understand new technology. You can stay in the past, but many people prefer to move forward.

Will it overtake a slower vehicle on a 2 lane road?
Not with the default software and settings, but there are forks of this that will do that as well as drive point to point on a GPS routed trip. Google dragonpilot to see what all it can do.

So I have a couple questions. The Comma.ai product shows compatibility with a 2024 Ranger but not a 2025, have some of you successfully installed it on a 2025? (My 2025 has ACC and lane centering)

If I understand correctly, the Comma.ai product is the hardware then you get the Openpilot software? @daytoncarter you mention that the Openware is free and the hardware can be purchased from another company, do you mean a different company than Comma.ai? What hardware are you using? (Obviously for a program like this quality and dependability trumps pricing)

Would this be an easy install for an advanced DIY mechanic and wireman and a mediocre (but getting better) technology guy?

I have a 2025 Lariat and it works fine. I would recommend buying a Comma 3x from Comma directly. It supports the free software development, then I'd install the latest version of Bluepilot which is a customized version of Openpilot for Fords. The 4 is the newest hardware but I'm not sure it supports Bluepilot.

You should consider joining the Comma.ai discord. Lots of actual experience there and there may be a sub that is related to the Ranger.

hands free driving, like a tesla does? man, i just don't feel safe when those are in hands free mode. my buddy has one and it made me anxious when he did it.
My sister has a new Model 3 with autodrive and she took me for a ride in it. I too was pretty anxious at the first busy intersection. I remember the first time I used the cruise control in my '95 Mustang. I was pretty nervous giving the car even that much control. Now I use CC on the highways almost all the time. The same would probably happen if I had full autodrive. You just get used to it the more you use it.

I'm on the fence about going with a full autodrive system on my Ranger, though, mostly because of the cost. I usually do a round trip from TX to NH once a year and the autodrive would probably help for that, but otherwise I suspect I wouldn't use it much. Not sure if a thousand bucks and some fiddling with the software install plus occasional updates is worth it.

My experience with Comma stuff since V1 was that it isn't at all fiddly. Set it up and it just worked. No need to update if you don't want to. Lots of experimentation available if you want to play around with it.
