I installed one this week on a 25 Lariat. Had the same gap at the tailgate. Based on the recommendation of an installer where I purchased the cover, I used 1/2'" spacers against the front of the bed where the silver cover mount makes contact to set the rail back equal amounts from the front, and that gave me a decent seal on the back. There's a fair amount of overlap at the front so I don't think I've introduced any gaps up there, and from what I can tell could probably go back farther if I needed to.

As the installer said there's always a little bit of monkeying around to get it just like you want it. I probably adjusted the rails 5-6 times to get them even, the back seal to the tailgate, and the roll and lock functions are really smooth now.

I just installed mine this weekend on my late 2024 xlt. It went on very easily and really no problems with alignment or clamps. Mine DOES have the same gap which I thought was just part of the design until I saw this thread. TBD whether it will leak or not.

a couple other things I noticed and have reached out to BAK on:

1. The ends of the rails are very sharp and unfinished, particularly the corner. It’s clear they just extrude the rails and chop them to fit. There should be some sort of cap otherwise this is going to scratch something or someone.

2. My instructions showed the retention strap attached bolt> washer> strap grommet> clamp. This puts all the pressure on the grommet once it’s tightened. My grommet already pulled out. I think the grommet should be in the spacer area of the “h” shaped clamp so that it doesn’t take any pressure. Considered doing it this way when I installed but figured I’d follow the instructions - should have trusted my gut.

if anyone gets the seal kit for the tailgate I’d like to see it. Will probably have to order one.

I am compelled to add to the conversation updating my previous comments. I worked with BAK customer service for 7 months when I noted my original cover did not fit well. I could not attach both bolts with thumbscrews at the front. Even when silly things were happening, like they sent me a new set of rails when the real issue was clearly the cover, they were always professional and courteous and probably even curious. Today I installed the replacement cover they sent. It is perfect. I mean, probably better than I expected and seriously you will not find a better fitting cover. It’s true that the rails are not fully custom for this or any build but they are fine and a bit of Dreme work and some paint would give them that custom finish. I think this is one of the best looking and now one of the best fitting covers you can find for a Ranger

So if our cover has the gap shown in the prior posts is it incorrectly fitting? Does it take a whole new cover to fix or is there a seal kit?

  • Great to hear mike burton.
I also received my replacement, installed this weekend, and am very happy with it as well; date produced: 4/18/25.
  • My cover is 59 1/2” not including rubber flap. My rails are 59 13/16”.
  • It does still have the visual gap which I think is going to happen just because of the tailgate cap shape.
  • However, to fix the real issue; now the foam/rubber seal on the underside is moved closer to the tailgate.
  • Also fixed the issue of the latches getting hung up and having to wrestle with it to get it closed.
  • My first cover had the longer front section that didn’t even allow me to put the bolts into the rail slots.
  • Only took 5 months for me. Hoping mike, my, and four others who I’m aware of, have spent time going back and fourth with them has solved this and now others can expect a good fitting cover.

My cover is 59 9/16" long. I thought it was a good fit, but I'm surprised the cover leaked front, back, and sides after an all day rain. I also did had to address sharp edge issues on the rails.

I got my new 25RR last week and the X4S arrived on Sat. Yesterday the install was confusing to say the least when I ran into the 2024 vs. 2025 issue on this bed cover. That's when I went on line and found this thread.
  • At first I was thinking why was my 25RR (build date 3/18/25) installed with 24 bed caps? Did Ford run out of the 25 bed caps?
  • No paper instruction manual, so you download the instructions which is very detailed regarding 2024 vs. 2025 install procedure. Once you look at the details you can tell the clamps are different and bulkhead gaskets are different.
  • The instructions gives you a packing list which says you are to have two different sets of gaskets and two different sets of clamps. I only got the 24 gasket and 24 clamps, and none of the 25 stuff that is suppose to be there.
  • Debated whether to try the install and decided to try it anyway and I now have a complete install. It is hard to get out of your head to follow instructions "not" for your year. That is not to say it was an easy install.
  • The rails require a screw to go through the clamp, rail, and bed, and really no slots in the rail itself. So the rail is going to land/set where the holes are with not much adjustment if any if any is needed. Another set of hands would have been nice for the rails. Mine did not want to lay flat at the ends but if you play with it enough they finally laid down correctly.
  • The bed cover was the correct size with plenty of overhang at the front. But to adjust the cover backward for a good fit to the tailgate, then the cover would not latch. Some slots in those rail screw holes would solve the gap problem at the rear I think. I have a fair fit at the tailgate but it could be better.
  • When I Installed the bed cover I saw that mine was built in Thailand in Nov. of 2024. The install manual you download was revised in 4/13/2025. So there is the disconnect between the install manual and what I received. I am assuming the ones made after mine must have all the parts for both 24 and 25. The shipping box on mine states: 24+ Ranger
  • Only guessing on this one, but this is a global truck made in many countries. I am thinking maybe somewhere else the 2025 model changed the bed cap, but not for the US market.
  • I wish BAK had just stated an A and B type bed cap through the pics and not tried to use the 2024 and 2025 identification.

My bed rails didn’t sit flat towards the tailgate on first install either. Loosened the clamps and whacked it with a rubber mallet and they are totally flush now.

it sounds like your claps are different than mine. They don’t go through any holes in the bed on the cover I got last week.

the lack of instructions was annoying. Scanned the qr in the package and it didn’t take me to the right link and I had to jump through some hoops with the vendor to get them. There was NO distinction in the directions I got between 24 and 25.

I got my replacement mid-week last week but haven't had a chance to install it. Sounds like maybe they did make some improvements so I'm anxious to get it "re-installed"

If anyone with the new/replacement cover could take some pics of the fit to the tailgate, I would appreciate it. Also would be interested in seeing the 2025 parts/clamps. Thanks.

For those of you with the “h” shaped clamps for the 2024 version - I suggest installing the strap grommet in the space with the arrow in the attached photo. The way the instructions show to install the strap will fail. Bolt>washer>bracket leg (NOT grommet) > grommet > bracket leg > hole > nut.

I agree it's crazy how sharp the edge of the rails are. If anyone's interested, I created custom end caps that fit over the end of the rails . BAK Revolver X4s/x4s-t Protective End Cap - Etsy

Im going to take a dremel or grinder to mine.

Ive been in contact with Bak regarding the tailgate gap on mine and they keep denying that its an issue, or pointing to other irrelevant things. Its clearly not right and I'm getting kind of frustrated with the whole thing. If I leave the rails alone and shift the cover back, it will close the gap, but then the cover won't seat with the lockers properly. I think the easiest fix is going to be figuring out a spacer at the bulkhead to set the rails back 0.25-0.5" since there is already plenty of coverage at the bulkhead.

They are sending me new retention straps though, so that issue is getting solved.

I'm a bit disappointed in the quality of the cover. The hardware is crap, I replaced all the nuts and bolts after one snapped on me installing. One of the clamps doesn't grip the rail well enough to hold down the end securely, so I may see if I can find an aftermarket one. Real Truck has been non-responsive and the only email I got was not helpful at all. At some point I will probably take off the rails and replace the weather stripping with something thicker to seal better. The cover works well enough and I can modify myself, but for the price the fit and finish really should be much better.
