Break in oil change before 9 hour trip? Currently at 1500 miles

2026 Ranger XLT FX4 currently 1500 miles. Planning a 9 hour trip, highway and mountain roads. Should I change the oil before the trip. New to the site, thanks all.

Lots of opinions on the site about this. I did mine at 500 miles and found lots of silicone in my first round. So really depends on your plan. I’m following the 4-5K miles per. Glad I did the initial at 500. Search the forum for first oil change and do a bit of reading. Also check out the YouTube channel The Motor Oil Geek -

I changed mine at 1,000 miles. My copper was 32ppm while the universal average (figured at 5,800 miles) is 4ppm and my Silicon was 170 with the UA being 19

I had 750 mi on my '26 but had a 2750 mile trip come up too soon for me to change it. Had to do it when I got home at 3400...you'll be fine either way, just keep up with them after and not at the recommended extended length...I'm doing 5k changes.

I changed mine at 1300 and switched to full synthetic. 3.0 FP tuned I'm making sure my oil is pristine. Probably go 4k next change or 6 months.

Never gonna hurt anything to change it early, I did 500,1500,5000,10000,14000(had a big trip so I knew I was gonna go over 15000)

Well, I would. I typically change oil in a new engine 500 - 1,000 miles then go every 5,000 miles afterward. On my new Ranger I changed it at 712 miles.

Bronco service manual says rings are broken in at 3K miles, so I did my first oil change soon after.

I used to spend a lot of time on BITOG. Learned it was quite a hobby for some people, but for passenger vehicles, that's about it.

Until someone takes identical engines and has a scientifically controlled test, I don't believe you'll get xx miles more out of an engine with an early oil change vs following the maintenance schedule.

Oil filters will capture anything large enough to do damage.

All of my families vehicles bought used went to hundreds of thousands of miles. I doubt a single one had multiple early oil changes.

A YouTube video won't change my experience, but they'd love to get my clicks for $.
