I have a new '24 Ranger Lariat, I am noticing that regardless what I'm doing, including coasting down hill in neutral, the fuel economy bar graph never reads above 30ish mpg. Is this a "working as intended" thing?

The truck wont average more then 30 since you won't be going down hill forever. And the numerical indicator will show more then 30 if you happen to find a town that has a good enough speed and not enough stops that you do get awesome gas mileage.

I say that because i got something like 25mpg in my nissan titan 5.6 liter v8 in colorado springs one week while visiting my son at the army base. Speeds are perfect for getting good gas mileage in town whole sight seeing. Not going to pike's peak though, terrible mileage to that place

I'm talking about the fuel economy gauge that displays instant fuel economy, not the average economy between resets.

It's working properly. I don't know, but I'm pretty sure the theory is that the times you're getting more than 30 mpg are short sections of downhill or driving in very high but perfect tail winds.

Those situations don't inform you about how your driving style influences overall mpg. Since your overall mpg is all that matters, showing a virtually meaningless scale does more harm than good.

It's 30 on our Raptor and 99.9 on our F150 hybrid.

you would think the 99.9 would be the same on the ranger. even on my 80s bmws, when going downhill, the indicator would swing full scale. i guess i never thought about it but its a good question about why doesn't it do it?

My hot take is its absence is to not give any false hope to raptor owners.

If it could reach up to 99mpg we would have jerks towing their raptors to make vids claiming 95 mpgs.

I kind of like that they are being realistic. I could probably get over 30 mpg average on a tank if I planned everything perfectly and never needed to stop, but there's no way that's going to happen in real life. The top being the best imaginable is better than it being wasted space.

I think it's just programmed that way. If the graph was to show 0-99, your normal MPG would be just a couple of lines on the graph, and a variance of 5-10 MPG would show little change on the graph.
